Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) new report: A stark warning.

'Global surface temperature will continue to increase until at least the mid-century under all emissions scenarios considered. Global warming of 1.5°C and 2°C will be exceeded during the 21st century unless deep reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) and other
greenhouse gas emissions occur in the coming decades.'

But action now will lead to discernable beneficial effects in 20 years if we can get onto a low emission pathway.

Some news from the Eddleston Water Project in the Scottish Borders! Tom Ball (Geography Programme Leader) has been closely involved with this project since its inception in 2010. The first empirical results from surface water monitoring have been published (with full public open access) on 4th May in the Journal of Flood Risk Management, with Tom as co-author. The paper focuses on hydrological lag as a measure of change (the time lag between the mid-point time of rainfall during rain events, and the subsequent stream flow peak).

The paper finds that lag times have increased by 2+ hours in catchments with areas up to 26 square km, which have been subject to natural flood management (NFM) such as debris restrictors and ponds. Meanwhile a further tributary catchment subject to just riparian planting and fencing showed no significant change in lag times. This controlled study extends the range of catchment scales in which NFM may be effective and thereby represents a major contribution to flood risk science.
