Life and Bank Holidays don’t come with guarantees of sunshine. We can moan—and sometimes we need to—yet we can also decide to ‘do it anyway’, despite any grey clouds or rain.

Last night, the forecast was for heavy rain and strong winds. Could I swim in the morning? I knew there would be wonderful high tide at Portland Castle, which would make a swim there really great.

I woke up this morning to rain, but the wind was light. So, I decided to drive to Portland Castle instead of walking there. In my car, I wriggled out of my clothes - my cossie was already on. I ran from the car, wrapped in a towel, clutching my cap and goggles to the slip way. No one else was mad enough to be there. I walked into the sea, dipping my shoulders under the water - cool, but not cold.

I swam with easy strokes, rain drops tip-tapping on my cap. Breathing in, following my hands as they cleanly sliced into the water, catching it and pushing back, breathing air out in bubbles under the water, head turning and breathing in again. Arms with high elbows and a lazy kick perfected over decades in my love affair with swimming in the sea.

Then, magically, at the end of my swim, a large shoal of fish, each the length of my hand, surrounded me. This is rare near to the castle - how wonderful to see so many of them, inches from me.

It would have been easy to have stayed in bed, to not go out in the rain. Yet, it is sometimes in these moments we get to experience an unexpected joy or pleasure.

I’m still hoping for sunshine for tomorrow - I have a garden fence to paint 🤞- but if it’s not to be, I will splash in the puddles instead 😊.

My home in Italy - Casa Tranquilla - is so very nearly finished. See my mini tour.

Today was a good day - three of the six due arrived. Just three to chase up again tomorrow. My home is in a maze of tiny streets the historical centre of Pizzo. Receiving parcels to furnish and decorate my home from scratch is tricky. I’m slowly training the regular couriers to call me from the main road above. Then I run up the hill to meet them to get my parcel. But so many parcels get lost. Last week, I tracked down 8 parcels to a restaurant. Some of these had been there for more than 2 weeks! The owner, kindly took them in for me, despite not knowing me. He simply thought I knew and I’d be along soon. And through Italian eyes, it was soon 😂 But as you can see, running up the hill when it is so hot, is a sweaty endeavour 🤣

Loving the life in Pizzo. Deliveries have been ‘challenging’ with couriers struggling or not wanting to find me. Today, my builder kindly stepped in and brought 9 big packages. It felt like Christmas 😊

It’s been thundery all week with awe inspiring lightening blots and loud thunder yet very little rain. Soon after this the sun shone brightly again!

The stairs up to my new home in Pizzo are narrow and turn too. Getting the bigger things into the house is nerve wracking affair. My builder, Rocco and the kitchen fitters from L**e Cucine were amazing today and my heart nearly stopped beating watching them battle with this larder cupboard.

I’ll be here for 5 or 6 weeks - until the house is truly finished. Love the place, the people, the sea and the food. I was lucky to find this gem, but it has also taken more than 2 years to get this far. All successes in life need a dash of luck and then commitment to do what needs to be done to get there. I’ll share a video of the house renovation soon. 😊
