Summer holiday club catch up 🌳🌳

It’s been a couple of days of being back to school but we wanted to catch you all up on our summer of fun!! 🤩🌳❤️

Our 6 weeks of holiday club went so quickly! We genuinely had the best time with the best forest schoolers!

We never fail to be amazed by the creativity of our forest schoolers. This year, the biggest trend of the summer was…knitting 🧶!!! Yes that’s right, a skill that has proved the test of time and now, we have 4 to 11 year old experts! This wasn’t just ordinary knitting, it was finger knitting. It took skill, concentration, perseverance and determination but so many children picked it up and so many absolutely loved it. Even Otto ended up with a scarf!! 🧣 ❤️
We have to give thanks to one of longest serving forest schoolers for this new craze, so thank you Maya, we will forever remember the summer of knitting 🧶 🥰❤️
(This did progress into children whittling knitting needles and having a go at traditional knitting!)

Another big hit of the summer was the quality and quantity of our blackberries! We picked endless amounts, sampling them at every opportunity. And then came the idea to crush them, and use sticks to dip into the juices and create…blackberry tattoos!!! This became very popular with us all sporting the most interesting designs on our arms, hands and in some cases…faces!!

Another favourite activity was fossil finding! We had a huge interest in cracking rocks to see if we could find crystals and fossils and we can report that we had some very interesting finds…we also know we have some budding palaeontologists amongst us 🛘🥰

As well as the new trends, all the classic forest school activities were as popular as ever 🌳
We whittled endless sticks, hammered so many nails, used piles of wood creating the most amazing pieces, painted beautiful pictures, used the clay to make wonderful designs, cooked up fabulous dishes in the mud kitchen, brushed up our fire lighting skills, played with our friends, made new friends, drank hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows, explored the woodland, played many games of ‘eagle in the nest’, relaxed in the hammocks, drew wonderful pictures, and swung and flipped endlessly on the very popular bars!! Phew… no wonder if went so fast…we were having far too much fun ❤️🥰🌳

Thank you so much to our wonderful forest schoolers for the best summer, we have thoroughly enjoyed your company and look forward to seeing some of you again in October 🎃

Enjoy your time back at school and we’ll see you all soon 🌳❤️🌳

End of year catch up 🌳🌳

Wow, we just can’t believe we’ve come to the end of another year at Keepers Gate Forest school! 🌳🌳❤️

This year has absolutely whizzed by for us!

The autumn term saw us welcome so many new Forest schoolers 🥰 they started their journey with us facing torrential rain, thunder and lightning ⚡️ We thought…if they can get through this….they’ll get through anything!!! 😬😬

Our new children were welcomed so warmly by our existing Forest schoolers and they soon adapted to our routines and began to embrace life in the woods!

It has been a year of extreme weather! The wettest winter ever taught us that we can survive for 8 hours in the rain, day after day, but not just survive, have a wonderful time, embrace the mud, embrace the puddles and just have the best fun 🤩 💧🌧️☔️ (our washing machines may disagree!!!)

We have also just experienced our warmest summer to date, and again, even in extreme heat, we have had a wonderful time. We’ve appreciated our shady, beautiful woodland more than ever 🌳🌳🌳

Little Forest schoolers…what can we say?
You continue to blow us away, time and time again. You have become so adventurous, so brave, so confident, so observant, so curious, so imaginative and such amazing friends 🥰🥰
We are unbelievably proud of each and every one of you, and for those who are leaving us to venture off to school, we let you go, knowing that you will face your new challenge with bravery and determination. You are all so ready and we hope that you share your amazing woodland knowledge with you new lucky teachers and friends 🌳❤️🌳
We’ll see you tomorrow for our very special end of year celebration 🎉

For those continuing with us in September, we wish you a very happy summer and look forward to being reunited soon 🥰

Next week sees the return of holiday club for 6 weeks!!! We’re ready for you Forest schoolers! Bring your ideas, bring your creativity and we’ll bring the marshmallows! ❤️❤️🌳

Forest school catch up 🌳🌳

We started the week with much excitement as we welcomed a little fluffy guest into the barn! It was quite early on Monday and something in the barn caught our eye! When we investigated, we found a little baby bird had flown in. He/she looked a little shell shocked 😮 Being Forest schoolers and all, we stood around cooing and aahing for quite some time! ❤️
Rachel eventually put out her hand and was able to pick the little bird up.
We took our little friend outside and let them settle onto the fence. Eventually it flew into the tree and remained there for a while whilst it called for mummy. What a lovely and magical start to the week. It’s moments like this that remind us how lucky we are 🐦‍⬛❤️🥰

It’s been a week of visitors as on Tuesday morning, one of our little Forest schoolers was stood, having a lovely chat with Ruby when Ruby noticed something large and green with long legs climb up our little Forest schooler and rest upon his hat! Much excitement followed as we gathered around, fascinated by the huge grasshopper that was sat upon the hat! 🧢
It stayed for such a long time and really did love the blue bucket hat! Eventually we helped him to rehome but what an amazing treat!
We are seeing and hearing so many grasshoppers in our field, it is still quite something to see how far they can jump and how quickly! 😊

Another amazing find came on Thursday when whilst moving some weeds across the field, Rachel discovered a luminous yellow spider upon her arm!! Never in our lives have we seen a spider that colour and again, we all gathered around in awe! We zapped with the app and found out it was a yellow crab spider!! It was AMAZING! 🤩🕷️

It’s been another hot week for us…mornings are wonderful and cool but afternoons are warm 🥵! We have been embracing the water and shade and doing quieter things like Reading, drawing, whittling and we’ve had a real interest in dominoes for the last few weeks (we found a set that we forgot we had)
The children are loving these! 🥰

Have a wonderful weekend little Forest schoolers and we will see you for our very last week of this academic year! Where has the time gone! 🥲

Friday forest school catch up 🌳🌳

Ooh it’s been a hot end to the week! 🥵🥵🥵
We’re so grateful for the woodland this summer, it’s providing us with some much needed shade and protection from the strong sun. ☀️☀️🌳
We’ve embraced it today, packing up after lunch and heading back to the woods with hammocks, spades, a rope, our imaginations and our water bottles!!

The mud kitchen has been super popular this week, and I think this is mainly down to the amount of water being used in recipes! The water play has also been an added relief from the heat! We’ve been filling up bottles, pouring into pans, using the colander to create showers and making the most delicious looking drinks!! 😬😅
We also cut some of our very healthy looking rosemary and used it to sprinkle into our cooking. 🪴

Our July poem is going so well! It’s all about a fox 🦊 and the children are learning it and the makaton signs really quickly. We have had big discussions about nocturnal animals and the animals that we are lucky enough to share our woodland with. We had proof of our animal friends this week when we found the most amazing and huge feather 🪶 at the top of the woods. When we zapped it with the app, it told us it was a buzzard feather! 🦅 On the same day, one of our little forest schoolers found a tawny owl feather! 🦉🪶❤️

In between the heat, we’ve seen some impressive hammering this week, including a wooden house, a tree, a cat and a monster! The hammering skills have become so strong and we love that our little forest schoolers have all these amazing ideas! 🔨🥰

A few weeks ago, our resident expert bee keeper, Rachel, managed to extract our first batch of honey from our amazing bees 🐝 Every staff member was gifted a jar and we can confirm that Keepers Gate Forest School honey is….delicious 😋🍯🐝🍯🐝🍯🐝❤️ how lucky are we? 🥰

Stay cool this weekend little forest schoolers and we’ll see you next week for more adventures and more sunshine! ☀️ 🌳❤️🌳
