On Wednesday, 20 Year 5 children were lucky enough to take part in an RAF Virtual STEM day.

The children were tasked with designing, building and testing three different gliders with a variety of wing and tail types. They tested all three to see which could travel the furthest, thinking carefully about how to carry out the test fairly. They then compared their results to draw conclusions.

Some of our gliders managed to travel a whopping 17m!

The children all showed a great deal of creative, teamwork and engineering skills and we were very proud of them.

The rest of Year 5 will be getting an opportunity to take part in a similar workshop soon, so watch this space!

In their weekly drama lessons with Mrs Paine this term...

Year 3 have been busy learning basic dramas skills as part of the finding your voice programme.

Year 4 have been exploring the story of the Iron Man and finding out how the characters felt about his presence in their community.

Year 5 have been devising ideas based in Beowulf and have worked really hard in small collaborative groups.

Enjoy looking at some of their dramatic tableaus!

Thank you to everyone who attended our poignant Year 5 and 6 Remembrance assembly this morning and for any contributions to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal this week.

Please enjoy some of the beautiful poppy art work created by children from across whole school, which is currently on display in the hall.

Lest we forget.

Year 6 have been busy being evacuated to Billingshurst this week as part of their World War II history topic. They joined in a number of activities led by the station staff and enjoyed a well earned war time snack after their journey.

On Monday afternoon, they were very fortunate to be visited by a real life evacuee who was able to give first hand experience of moving from Fulham, to Worthing and then Yorkshire during the war. We feel very lucky to have had this opportunity to ask lots of questions and have them answered in such a meaningful way.

Severe Weather Warning, Thursday 2 November 2023

There is an amber weather warning in place for the South East of England for much of tomorrow, due to high winds and heavy rain. We expect the school to be open as usual but will of course communicate with you as soon as possible if the situation changes via MCAS. We would encourage everyone to take extra care on their journeys to school and ask you take particular care along Blackbridge Lane, leaving longer for your journey in order to park sensibly, further away from the school.

Thank you for your co-operation.

To end their half term topic about 'Fire!', Year 2 had a visit from the West Sussex Fire Service!

They spoke to the children about fire safety in the home, smoke alarms, the role of the fireman and how firefighters put out a fire today, compared with during the Great Fire of London.

The children also got a full explanation of all the equipment stored in a Fire Engine and had a quick visit to the cabin too. They also all got to hold the hose while the fire-fighter sprayed water!

Tuesday 10th October marks World Mental Health Day.

We are sharing the 'Optimistic October' calendar from Action for Happiness, which we have displayed around the school for our staff and change as the theme changes each month.

Today encourages us all to 'Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished recently'.

The calendars are free to access via the Action for Happiness website and may be something you would like to have displayed at home as a talking point or reflection tool too.

Last week, Year 3 had an exciting visit to Butser Ancient Farm to support their Stone Age to Iron Age learning in history.

They made pottery beads, had a Stone Age site tour of the roundhouses, did an archaeological excavation looking for artefacts and used their historical enquiry skills in order to make suggestions about what the artefacts were used for.

A brilliant day!

Last week, we were lucky enough to be given a coding workshop delivered by the wonderful Stemettes which was fully funded by the Department for Transport. 32 of our girls from Years 4, 5 and 6 were given the opportunity to take part. They designed a futuristic mode of transport, imagined a story involving their transport idea and then coded a scene from their story! We were so impressed with their creativity, teamwork skills, deduction skills, coding skills and enthusiasm.

After lunch, we were joined by our esteemed judges: Mrs Hadden and Mrs Jagger! The girls confidently presented their storyboards and shared their coded animations. The girls were very supportive of each other and their ideas which was really lovely to see. They were judged on creativity of their story, coding content and originality of their futuristic transport idea. Although they were blown away by the teamwork and ideas from all of the girls, the judges were particularly impressed by the creativity of one pair and the environmental twist on their storyboard and transport idea. Well done to Chloe and Mila, our overall winners!

Stemettes run free coding workshops throughout the year both in-person and online. Every event is free and they even provide free food at the in-person events. Find more information here:

Here at Arunside School, our dynamic Student Council and Eco Agents are taking part in two exciting new programmes, 'The Big Battery Hunt' in collaboration with Duracell and 'Recycle to Read' with Tesco. Please read below for ways you can support us with these initiatives.

The Big Battery Hunt is a nationwide programme to help educate and inspire young people to recycle dead batteries.
We are racing against other schools around the country to see who recycles the most this year and may win a prize.

Please bring your used batteries to the school office where we will add to our battery collection bins. We have a few spare battery boxes available for your home if necessary.

We will reveal our score at the end of the academic year!

The Recycle to Read Toys programme is collecting Planet Care points by rehoming and recycling their unwanted and broken toys.

If they are still in a usable condition; either find them a new home by swapping them with friends or giving them away to a charity shop or other community group that will appreciate them.

Register your rehoming!
Go to fill in a short form and select our school to collect the Planet Care Point you have earned. PLUS, if you upload a photo of your toys in their new home, you will be entered into a prize draw* and the photos will appear on the Recycle to Read gallery.

If you have any broken hard plastic toys, please take them to a participating Tesco store and put them in a Recycle to Read collection bin.

Register your Recycling!
Once you’ve put the broken toy/s in the collection bin, scan the QR code on the bin and register your recycling to select our school to collect one Planet Care Point. Scanning the code and registering your recycling will make you eligible for the prize draw* and give you the chance to win some exciting book bundle prizes.

PLUS, all families that register rehoming or recycling, will get a discount code to spend on books in the Harper Collins Recycle to Read book catalogue.

You can find a participating Tesco store, details of the prizes you and the school could win, and everything else you need to know about Recycle to Read Toys at

At School, we are also collecting all sizes yogurt, cream or milk foil lids (not plastic ones) to use in our ‘waste’ arts and crafts sessions. Please send your younger one to school with as many as you can (washed) and deliver them to Mrs Kalinka or Mrs Chaffe.

Thank you,

Student Council and Eco Agents

What better way is there to spend a very hot day in school, other than taking a dip in the 'cool pool' created by Year 6 in their forest school session today!

An ingenious idea of theirs, made completely independently using brilliant teamwork and problem solving skills.

Well done Rowan Class!
