JOHN COAD
Redcoat - Rebel - Traitor - Survivor
This week's video will be about one of the most famous of the Duke of Monmouths rebels - John Coad.
Coad was a member of the Somerset Militia who changed sides at Axminster. Grievously wounded at Philips Norton he was eventually brought before Judge Jeffreys.
Despite being a turncoat and imprisoned for treason he escaped ex*****on.
Part one will be out this week!

I'll be reenacting the Monmouth Rebellion this weekend with the Taunton Garrison at Glastonbury Abbey.
I thought it would be an appropriate time to do a video on the weapon that terrified Monmouth's royal opponents.

Elizabeth's Tide Letter - would it save her from the axe?
Queen Elizabeth I is now seen as the great Gloriana. A queen who has had an entire era named after her, and reigned during: the Spanish Armada, Drake's circumnavigation of the globe and the writing of Shakespeare.
Yet during her half-sister's reign (Mary I) not only was she imprisoned in the Tower of London on suspicion of treason, she was also days, if not hours away from the ex*****oner's axe.
How did she escape the grisly end of her mother Anne Boleyn?
Let's have a look!

Charles I raises his standard Nottingham 1642
The English Civil War started in 1642. The phrase, 'Charles I raised his standard at Nottingham and so began the war,' is often used.
But who was there? What actually happened? Was the raising of the standard greeted by crowds of cheering supporters?

The Lobsters of the English Civil War
LOBSTERS IN THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR
It wasn't only dashing, long-haired cavaliers with big floppy hats and buff-coat wearing roundheads riding around on horses.
Parliament's forces differed from the royalist armies in one major respect. Parliament had heavy cavalry. And not just any cavalry.
Cuirassiers.
Men in full plate armour from head to knee.
Were they successful?
Would they go on for decades as a successful cavalry type?
Let's take a look!

106 years ago today...thousands of British, Commonwealth and French soldiers got up out of their trenches. They walked across No Man's Land with rifle and full pack into the teeth of German machine gun fire.
A generation was lost on the first day of the Somme. Nearly 60,000 allied casualties.
Please, please take a moment today to stop and remember these men. They deserve that at the very least.
On that day, the Newfoundland Regiment attacked the German lines. Out of an attacking force of 801 men...only 68 returned.
As the famous historian Richard Holmes once said of the Great War's Tommy..."The very least of them is more of a man than I could ever be."
We WILL remember them ๐

THE MOST REBELLIOUS TOWN
The Taunton Garrison are at Colyton on Saturday 9th July.
During the Monmouth Rebellion, Colyton was the most rebellious town and still takes immense pride in the fact.
For these special rebellion days, the whole town gets involved. There are displays, kids' activities, sketches, weapon displays and finally an always moving drumhead service in the church.
Be great to see you!

ENGLISH CIVIL WAR WORKSHOP
A great morning spent at Wellington School discussing how soldiers fought and died during the Great Rebellion.
Year 8 learnt what it took to be a pikeman, how heavy the armour and helmet was and just how difficult it was to wield a weapon nearly 18 foot long!
After learning how strong and burly the pikemen needed to be, the children were shown the intracies and dangers of being a civil war musketeer. Matchlocks, flintlocks, pistols, blackpowder and musket balls were all on display.
The children then listened to the boom of musket fire across their fields.
To finish each session off, we looked at the different types of cannon ammunition that was used, how it would effect a densely packed unit of men and how the dreaded barber surgeon would attempt to treat them.
A great day with an incredibly interested year group!
