mons iratus eruptus est. The Romans never actually had a word for ‘volcano’, with our word deriving from the name of the Roman god of fire and smithery, Vulcan (‘Vulcanus’ in Latin). Vulcan was said to have his forge in the base of Mount Etna in Sicily. If you would like to learn Latin, please do comment below or message us.
Mount Etna has erupted 😮

The days of the week in Latin (and what the ‘sciurus’ - ‘squirrel’ - does each day, in case you were curious… 🐿️ 😃). Notice how, in English, we only really have ‘Saturday’ and ‘Sunday’ from the Romans because we get our other five days from the Vikings’ gods rather than the Romans’ gods.

When it comes to learning Latin and Greek, you cannot escape the fact that you need to learn word endings and you need to practise regularly. I can help you to master word endings with simple, no-nonsense exercises which I have used for over twenty years and which will take no longer than five minutes per day, from Monday to Friday. Comment on this post for details on how to book a lesson or DM me.

When revising for GCSE set texts, it’s essential to read the English translation until you are completely familiar with the story. Then learn some Latin words for each line so that you can recognise that part of the text when you’re presented with it. It’s never too late! ✍️ 📖🙂👍
