📚 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗖𝗦𝗘 𝗼𝗿 𝗔-𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁

Supporting your child through mocks and then the real exams can seem daunting. However, there are some simple yet effective strategies you use to support your child.

🗣️ Get them to teach you!
You don't need to know the History yourself. Ask your child to explain a topic to you. If they can explain it clearly, that's a good indication that they understand it.

🔗 Help them make connections
History isn't just a list of dates. Encourage them to think about causes, consequences, change, continuity, significance, similarity and difference.

✍️ Practise exam questions
Knowing the content is only part of doing well in History. Students also need to know how to use that knowledge to answer the specific question being asked.

If your child has GCSE or A-level mocks in November or December, now is a great time to find out exactly what they will be assessed on and start revisiting the content little and often.
Good habits now can make exam preparation much less overwhelming later in the year.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲 ❤️

I was genuinely so touched to receive this lovely review from a former Year 11 student. It is always wonderful to hear that a student found their lessons helpful, but it means even more when you have watched their confidence and enjoyment of History grow over time.

I’m particularly pleased that, after studying History with me, he decided to change his A-level options and choose History. He had rediscovered his love of the subject and that is one of the best outcomes a tutor could hope for. 📚

I tutored him on Friday evenings, and I always looked forward to our sessions. He had a wonderfully enquiring mind, asked thoughtful questions and had a genuine desire to improve. Those qualities made our lessons a real pleasure.

📚 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗖𝗦𝗘 𝗼𝗿 𝗔-𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟭

September might feel early to be thinking about exams, but for some students, GCSE and A-level mocks are already on the horizon in November and December.

So what can parents do to help without becoming the revision police? 😄

Here are some simple ideas:

🏡 Create a calm study space
A quiet, organised place with fewer distractions can make it easier to concentrate.

⏰ Encourage regular study
Little and often is usually more manageable than trying to learn an entire topic the night before a test.

🧠 Encourage them to retrieve, not just reread
Close the book and ask:
👉 What happened?
👉 When did it happen?
👉 Why did it happen?
👉 What were the consequences?
👉 Why was it significant?
Flashcards, quizzes and mind maps from memory can all help students practise recalling information.

✨ Tuition doesn’t always have to be long-term to make a big difference.

I recently worked with an iGCSE History student who came to me quite late in the school year, so I was only able to fit in a few sessions.

But sometimes, a few highly focused sessions can be incredibly effective.

Rather than trying to cover everything, we identified the specific areas she needed to develop and used our time together for targeted exam practice.

We focused on:
📚 What the question was really asking
✍️ How to develop her answers
🎯 Where she could gain the most marks
💡 How to approach exam questions with greater confidence

It was wonderful to hear how well she had done in her iGCSE History exam — and even more lovely to receive such a kind review from her mum.

It was honestly the highlight of my day. ❤️

It was a great reminder that tuition doesn’t necessarily need to be months or years long to have an impact. Sometimes, focused, targeted support at exactly the right time can make all the difference.
