Happy International Bat Appreciation Day! In the UK, we have 18 species of bats 🦇. Bats often get a bad reputation, feared by the public due to folklore and pop culture where they are frequently associated with evil and the supernatural. Here are a few reasons to celebrate bats:
🦇 Seed Dispersal - Bats are responsible for up to 96% of seed dispersal, which promotes biodiversity and helps maintain healthy ecosystems
🦇 Pollination - Several bat species are vital pollinators, they are known to pollinate over 500 plant species! The reason we have crops like bananas and avocados - is thanks to bats 🥑
🦇 Pest control - Bats in the UK eat insects such as moths, midges, mosquitoes, and flies. By doing so, they reduce the need for chemical pesticides and make gardens both healthier and more eco-friendly! 🌸
Join us today in celebrating our brilliant bats!

Today our level 3 learners went on a trip to the Trentham Monkey Forest! These guys are Barbary Macaques, native to North Africa. Trentham forest is the largest primate habitat in the UK with ~140 monkeys residing here. They are endangered due to the illegal pet trade, deforestation, and due to being exploited for tourists. It was a lovely day out for our Level 3s to see how these guys would act in the wild! ⭐️

Ava, a Level 1 Animal Care student, helping our keepers weigh and check the goats hooves during husbandry today! 🐐

Overgrown hooves can lead to lameness and discomfort, so it is important to check their hooves as part of a routine health check. This way animal carers can ensure that goats remain comfortable and mobile.

🏠Our Level 1s have just finished making their very own nesting boxes - just in time for several species’ breeding season!

In the wild, birds naturally nest in holes in trees, old walls and roof spaces. Unfortunately due to habitat fragmentation, natural nesting sites are becoming more difficult to navigate.

Nesting boxes help offer birds a secure place to raise their young, which will also protect them from harsh weather conditions and predators.

The nesting boxes you see here are called ‘Open-fronted boxes’ which suit wrens, wagtails, and especially robins! We can’t wait to get our nesting boxes up and see who decides to make a home! 🪺🐣

Yesterday our Level 2 ABC group were weighing our alpacas and administering anti-parasite treatments! Keeping our animals healthy isn’t just about feeding them - regular weighing and anti-parasite treatment are essential parts of responsible care! Here’s why:
⭐️ Small weight changes can reveal BIG problems such as possible pain, dental issues, or underlying diseases
⭐️ Accurate body weight ensure animals receive the right portion sizes and maintain a healthy body condition
⭐️ Some parasites can be passed to humans - routine treatment keeps both animals and people safe!
⭐️ Parasite-free animals are more comfortable, energetic, and able to express normal behaviour
