Electrical Installation for Maintenance Technicians

This course gives new starters a practical introduction to industrial electrical installation, covering the design, installation, and testing of common distribution circuits through hands‑on training. It builds the core skills needed for safe, effective maintenance work and helps develop multi‑skilled personnel who reduce reliance on contractors and minimise downtime.

Had an excellent day yesterday delivering safe use of workshop equipment training at Maesbury Metals on behalf of Momentum Training.

You really need to check this place out, they do some amazing work with people who have learning difficulties and they produce some amazing artwork, ornaments etc that they sell to members of the public, for an extremely good price.

Excellent for gift ideas or if you just want something different for your own home.

A few years ago, we made a costly mistake trying to be innovative.

We invested £1000s in a new machine.

On paper, it ticked every box.
In reality, it barely got used.

Not because the technology wasn’t a good fit.

But because we hadn’t set our people up to get the most from it.

That experience taught us something important:

Investing in fancy machines is not innovation.

It’s about how you use them.

Today, we approach things differently.

We involve the team early.
We explain the “why” behind the investment.
We give people the time and support to learn and adapt.

The real value of any machine comes from the people operating it.

When they understand it, challenge it, and improve it…

That’s when innovation actually happens.

Technology is only part of the equation.

People are what make it work.

Benefits of On‑Site vs Classroom Training

Choosing the right training environment can make a huge difference to how quickly teams build competence and apply new skills. Both on‑site and classroom‑based delivery have clear advantages — the key is matching the method to the outcome you want.

On‑Site Training – Key Benefits

• Immediate workplace relevance
Training happens on your equipment, in your environment, with your processes. Skills transfer is instant.
• Real‑world fault scenarios
Engineers learn using the machines they maintain every day, including the quirks, wear patterns, and legacy issues that generic classrooms can’t replicate.
• Reduced downtime & travel costs
No hotels, no mileage, no lost time. Teams stay on‑site and available.
• Stronger engagement
Learners connect faster when they can see exactly how the training applies to their job.
• Customised to your risks & compliance needs
PUWER, maintenance routines, safety procedures — all aligned to your site.

Classroom Training – Key Benefits

• Distraction‑free learning
Ideal for theory-heavy subjects where focus is essential.
• Access to controlled training rigs
Perfect for building fundamentals before working on live plant.
• Mixed‑industry learning
Learners benefit from hearing how other sites solve similar problems.
• Scalable for larger groups
Efficient for standardised training or multi‑site teams.

Which is best?

Most organisations benefit from a blended approach:

• Classroom for core principles
• On‑site for applied skills, fault‑finding, and compliance alignment

This combination delivers the strongest competence, confidence, and long‑term reliability improvements.

How do you prefer to develop skills, on‑site, in the classroom, or a mix of both?

Reflecting on another great week delivering training to maintenance apprentices.

While the image may not look like much at first glance, it shows a fully functional direct-on-line (DOL) motor starter circuit — built from scratch.

What stood out most was the students’ focus and dedication. With no prior experience, they successfully completed the task in just one day — a fantastic achievement.
