Today, we explored the ocean through light, colour and texture. Using translucent blue loose parts, shells and ocean animals, the children experimented with layering, matching and creating patterns while discovering different shades of blue and reflections.
They explored ocean animal x-ray pictures, matching them with the corresponding animals and developing their curiosity and observation skills.

Also, they discovered sand and water together, exploring how water changed the texture and form of the sand and discovering what they could create with it.

My Invitation to Explore Light, Shadow & Colour

I created an open-ended invitation for the children to explore light, shadow and colour using translucent materials, coloured shapes and loose parts.

The children experimented with layering, moving and arranging the materials, noticing how light travelled through them and created different colours, reflections and shadows.

Making Fresh Orange Juice

A refreshing invitation to explore, create and serve!

The children used fresh oranges, an orange juicer, colourful cups, glass bottles, ladles, tweezers, fresh mint leaves and light cubes as pretend ice cubes.

They carefully used the ladles to transfer the orange juice and tweezers to pick up the pretend ice cubes and add them to their cups, developing their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and concentration.

Using the orange juicer, they squeezed the oranges to make their own fresh orange juice, then added water, pretend ice cubes and fresh mint leaves to complete their drinks.

Once their juice was ready, the children proudly served their creations to their friends, encouraging imaginative role play, communication and social interaction.

Little Ice Cream Shop

An invitation to create, scoop, decorate and serve.

The children used coloured playdough to create their own ice creams in cones and sundae bowls, experimenting with different ways to scoop and shape the playdough.

They learned how to use the ice cream scoop by pressing the handle to release the “ice cream”, developing hand strength, coordination and fine motor control along the way.

With sprinkles, gems, bells and cinnamon sticks as pretend toppings, the children added their own creative touches before proudly serving their ice creams to one another and, of course, to me!

Through simple, open-ended resources, we explored imaginative play, fine motor skills, creativity and social interaction, all while having lots of fun in our little ice cream shop.

Process art is all about exploring, experimenting and celebrating children’s own ideas. Through splashing, mixing colours and creating marks, the children developed their own artwork while sharing their thoughts and discoveries with each other.

The final piece is a reflection of their creativity, collaboration and the joy of the process.

Sharing, collaborating, and creating together.

In our mud kitchen, children explored a fizzy potion invitation using dry leaves, lavender, fresh flowers, and coloured baking soda. As they shared resources, took turns, and worked together, they discovered that the process of creating is just as meaningful as the outcome.

Small World is more than just a themed setup.

Through the Curiosity Approach, Small World should be an invitation to explore, imagine and create. Instead of using only fabric, try adding different natural elements such as water, sand, soil, bark, stones or plants. Reflection and light can also transform children’s play use mirrors, torches, table lamps or projectors to encourage curiosity and discovery.

Remember, the environment doesn’t need to look perfect. It should encourage children to lead their own play, make choices and build their own stories.
