I have taught English in schools across the UK and overseas, including Canterbury, Romney Marsh, Singapore, Hemingford Grey, Aylesford, Ashford, and Weymouth. Tailored resources
Some teachers and tutors rely on textbooks, with the occasional handout, to plan their lessons. I’ve always created my own resources (although I have plenty of commercially-produced study guides to fall back on), tailoring these to the particular needs of my students.

A lifetime of teaching
This can become a bit of an obsession, however: I have two large filing cabinets and three bookcases groaning with over-stuffed ring-binders. In my long teaching career, I’ve worked with Year 7s (and sometimes Juniors) through to second-year Sixth Formers.

Resources
Over the years, I’ve produced guides to Sentences, Verbs, Vocabulary, Jekyll and Hyde, A Christmas Carol – to name but a few. I’ve taught Macbeth almost every year; this has produced four bulky files on its own!

Here is a wonderful review from my student, Aveneesh:

"When it initially came to English, I remember finding it gruelling and difficult back in Year 9. Analysis was hard to get around; you had to write heaps upon heaps just to barely scavenge the marks you wanted and with no clear way of answering questions, I considered it to be the hardest subject of all of my exams, both Language and Literature.

However, when I decided to have a tutoring session with Sue for the first time, that was the time I realised I might have hope. She made English not only enjoyable but also easy to understand. While many English lessons focus on writing essays, Sue’s
focus on lessons being more from a discussion standpoint, which allowed me to understand and grasp concepts more easily.

She also has a good knowledge of several historical contexts and makes analysis not only easy but surprisingly fun as well (something I thought wasn’t even possible!) even when it came to texts I’d never seen in my life before that I was expected to fully analyse on exam day in 45 minutes. She taught me techniques to remain calm under pressure and find ways to show that I treated my texts not as necessities, but rather for the pieces of literature that they are.

Thanks to her aid, I ended up getting 9s for both Language and Literature, to be precise, 155/160 on my English Literature and 124/160 on my English Language, which were grades that if I told my Year 9 self he would receive, he would
have called me a delusional madman.

I want to thank her for everything she has done for me and if you decide to choose her as an English tutor, trust me, you won’t regret it! She has a genuine passion and enjoyment for the subject and teaching as a whole and even made me enjoy it more than I thought I could. For that I’ll always be grateful (and I’m sure you will too!)."
