What happens when you open the door to The Hideout? A whole lot of learning, laughter and a little bit of magic!

Week 4 at Super Phonics was packed with hands-on activities tailored to different ages and abilities.

From Rapunzel-inspired phonics, number work, place value and sentence up-levelling, to creating beautiful descriptions of what we could see from her tower window.

We tackled Lego spelling corrections, practised common exception words, explored syllables, oral blending, letter recognition and formation with our Reception learners, and headed off on a jungle adventure to meet a capybara while building brilliant sentences using adjectives and verbs.

Every session is different, every child is different, and that’s exactly how learning should be.

With 19 years of teaching experience, I create fun, engaging sessions where children build confidence, develop their skills and discover just how much they can achieve.

Updated group schedule

I’ve made a few changes to my small group tutoring timetable, with a mixture of Phonics, English & Maths and Advanced Phonics & Spelling sessions now available.

Sessions are kept small, with a maximum of 4 children, so there’s plenty of opportunity for individual support while still learning through fun, practical and hands-on activities.

There are currently spaces available across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, including some groups that can be tailored to suit the children who join.

If you’re looking for some extra support for your child in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, send me a message and I’d be happy to chat about which group might be the best fit.

My first week of being self-employed… and I think I’ve found exactly where I’m meant to be.

After 19 years in the classroom, it felt very strange not getting up and heading into school. Instead, I got to spend my time doing something I genuinely love, teaching children through fun, practical and hands-on learning.

And what a first week it was!

I was so busy enjoying myself that I completely forgot to show you what we had been up to, so better late than never… here’s our Week One review!

Advanced Phonics
We used LEGO challenges to explore alternative spellings for the /oa/ sound. We sorted words, hunted for them in LEGO passages and then used them to create our own sentences.

Reception English & Maths
We headed off on a Five Little Ducks maths adventure, hatching eggs, counting ducks, hunting for numbers and ordering them.

Year 2 English & Maths
It was time for a jungle adventure! We explored tens and ones before crossing Crocodile Creek and finding missing numbers along the way.

1:1 Phonics
We finished the week with a hands-on phonics session in the water, finding and identifying sounds as we learned through play.

This is exactly what I wanted my tutoring sessions to be.

Fun. Hands-on. Engaging. Purposeful.

I want children to leave The Hideout feeling like they’ve had fun, while knowing they’ve achieved something too.

And after my first week, I can honestly say…

I think I’m going to LOVE this!

One of the biggest misconceptions about tutoring is that it’s only for children who are behind.

It isn’t.

Some children need extra support.

Some need confidence.

Some need more opportunities to practise.

Some need help understanding something that hasn’t quite clicked yet.

And some children are already doing brilliantly but would benefit from being challenged further.

That’s why my initial assessment is so important.

I want to understand where your child is now and where you’d like them to go next.

My new groups are designed for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, with a maximum of four children per group.

Learning can be fun AND purposeful.

Especially for young children.

My tutoring sessions are packed with learning, but I don’t believe that every minute needs to look like sitting quietly at a desk completing worksheets.

We might use games.

We might move around.

We might use practical resources.

We might turn a tricky concept into a challenge.

Because when children are engaged, interested and enjoying themselves, they’re much more likely to want to keep learning.

My aim is always:

Lots of learning. Lots of fun. Lots of “I can do it!” moments.

And yes — we still do the hard work too. 😉

My new class schedule is here, and I still have a few spaces available for children looking for fun, engaging support with their learning.

From phonics and early reading to English, maths and advanced phonics & spelling, sessions are tailored to help children build confidence while enjoying their learning.

Before your child joins one of my tutoring groups, I want to get to know them first.

Every child has a different starting point, different strengths and different things they find tricky.

That’s why all children complete an initial assessment before joining a group.

The assessment takes around an hour and will look at English, maths and/or phonics depending on the group you’re interested in.

But it’s not just about worksheets and scores.

I also take the time to talk to parents about:

✨ What you’re concerned about
✨ What you’d like your child to achieve
✨ Anything you’ve noticed at home or school

And I get to know your child too, including their interests and what they enjoy.

This helps me understand where they’re currently working and, importantly, which group will be the best fit for them.

The initial assessment is £20, compared with £35 for a normal tutoring session.

Leaving teaching was a big decision.

But ultimately, it came down to one thing.

I wanted to be able to give children the time, attention and individualised support that I love providing through tutoring.

I want to know what makes each child tick.

I want to understand what they’re finding difficult but also what they’re brilliant at.

I want to know what they enjoy so I can bring those interests into their learning.

And I want children to leave a session thinking:

“I can do this.”

That’s why I’ve decided to focus completely on tutoring.

And this September, I’m taking the next step by opening my first small-group tutoring sessions for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

Just four children maximum in each group.
