Why Great Athletes Often Fail as Coaches

According to analysis, highly talented athletes often make poor coaches because they have difficulty relating to athletes who are not naturally talented. They often find it frustrating to teach skills that came instinctively to them, a phenomenon often described as "you can't coach being the best in the world".

Some athletes do not go through the comprehensive learning process others need, and hence are not capable of guiding others through that process.

Having not gone through the process with their coaches, and only gone through a process of instruction, the successful athlete finds it difficult to become a effective coach, unless of course they find themselves working with an an athlete possessing exceptional natural abilities, who compensates for their lack of self awareness.

2026 Improvement Goals

What do you have planned for 2026? Consolidation or improvement of your skills and processes?

Anyone who is serious about their shooting should have a plan — whether it’s written down or simply clear in their mind. This plan may be developed with a coach or created independently, based on experience and personal goals.

If you are looking to improve your coaching skills, you can do no better than taking part in an ESC coaching course. The ESC course is very different from those offered by other federations. It provides participants with all the key technical knowledge required to coach and understand every clay target shooting discipline — rather than offering only a limited portion of technical information.

When a coach instructs a student, it is often just that — an instruction. Sometimes this involves experimenting with positions, visual focus, movement patterns, or gun mechanics. The ESC course, developed by OTS, takes coaching to another level. It makes coaching easier by clearly showing and demonstrating how positions, visual skills, and movement patterns are derived from simple, evidence-based principles that are logical and difficult to dispute.

Coaches of any level, and with any qualification, will undoubtedly learn from this course. It may clarify concepts or beliefs that were previously misunderstood. The course is highly engaging and welcomes different coaching philosophies — provided they can be supported by common sense, data, analysis, or practical demonstration. 4 weeks since the ESC Shotgun Coaches Course in Estonia. For those who have enquired about next level courses, at the moment they are planned for 2026.

The ESC Coaches Course for Shotgun concluded today. Yesterday was a range day conducted with the assistance of some Estonian shooters. A long day that also included some work with Gun Fit, analysis, practical corrections and effects.

Evaluation and analysis of shooter's technique, movement and visual control was among other things addressed.

So on conclusion today, we managed to finish on time and complete a short examination to add to all the presentations, assignments, and discussion.

ESC Level 1 coaches certificates were presented to participants before everone left for their travel home.

Congratulations to all participants, it was a pleasure to has been able to present our thoughts and philosophy. I learned and hope that they learned something new 👏
