Ryan the Writing Tutor

Ryan the Writing Tutor The fun, friendly English tutor turning reluctant writers into confident storytellers, without it ever feeling like another school lesson!

Inspiring children (aged 8-12) in Steyning, Shoreham & Burgess Hill for 7 years. And previously as a TA in schools. Ryan the Writing Tutor provides fun and interactive story-writing and poetry lessons for children aged 8-12. These exciting 1:1 sessions include ball games and escape rooms to help boost your child’s creative writing, grammar and spelling in a way that really sticks. Your child will

love entering creative writing competitions, where they can show off their talents and boost their confidence. With a particular focus on tutoring struggling writers, Ryan designs every lesson with your child's passions in mind. The hardest part is getting them to put their pencil down at the end! Ryan offers both in-home tutoring in the Steyning, Henfield and Shoreham area, and online tutoring for those further afield. He also prepares students for their Year 6 SATs.

I can't wait to use these fun little boxes in our lessons! Each child will get an Ideas Bank to fill with story ideas, interesting words, characters and all the creative nuggets that pop into their heads. Then when they need a bit of inspiration, they can have a quick rummage and find an idea that catches their eye.

What would you put in your Ideas Bank?

Thanks so much to Lydia 🙂 It means a lot that Benny looked forward to our time together. He even wrote me this card, with two of his favourite games from our sessions on the front: Spelling Stepping Stones (on the left) and Spelling Basketball (on the right). I love it!

Unbelievably, it's now 15 years since I walked onto the stage at the Brighton Dome with a serious case of jelly-legs, ready to graduate with my English Literature & Education degree.

Looking back at this snap from that day, it's funny to think how much has changed since then. JLS were number 1 in the charts, phones had buttons, and TikTok was still just the sound a clock made!

At the time, I had no idea where the next 15 years would take me. But somewhere between studying English, my time as a teaching assistant, and helping a class invent a superhero made of custard, I realised that tutoring was where I loved being most.

It's the little moments that make it so special, like seeing a child's eyes light up when they realise they really can write that poem, and of course, the little "aw" when it's time to put their pen down at the end.

Here's to the next 15 years!

Torin, from Hurstpierpoint, was amazed to hear that his funny short story had been chosen for publication in a book. He loved playing around with language and creating characters like Count Spatula and a sausage dog made of sausages!

What an achievement, Torin!

Louie, from Storrington, really rose to the challenge this week. He had a clever idea: what if he tried a trickier form of poem and aimed to win a national poetry competition?

With a sprinkle of rhyme and personification, he very quickly went from poetry 'noob' to poetry pro!

Here's the opening quatrain of his sonnet, which more than earned him 'Writer of the Week':

"On his screen, the bright pixels dance and gleam.
As majestic as a sparkling disco ball.
Only at 13, he chases the big dream.
Thinking about Fortnite while he's at school."

Well done, Louie!

“Ryan! Ryan!” came the call as I was walking down the garden path.
“I’ve made you this while your car is getting fixed!”

One of my students surprised me with this fab LEGO car he’d built. Bless his heart!

Wishing everyone lots of smiles and a very Merry Christmas 🎄

Fred, from Hurstpierpoint, has a real talent for writing stories. In fact, his work is so strong, I often have to think of extra creative ways to challenge him!

With a passion for chilling, edge-of-your-seat tales, I truly think we've got the next Stephen King here! 👻
