The full Kelvin Club's term card for lent is finally out!

Today we will be having Dr Samuel Cabot at college theatre at 8:45pm. Everyone is welcomed to join from 8:30pm for pre-drinks and refreshments at the Lubbock Room.

"Uncommunicative Worlds in our Solar System"

Abstract:
Dr Cabot's talk will cover two outstanding mysteries of our Solar System and how his work at Cambridge aims to solve them:

The first mystery centres on Venus, which may have hosted an Earth-like climate and oceans of liquid water. However, Venus' hostile present conditions make it difficult to determine its ancient climate. Dr Cabot will discuss how ancient Venusian rocks could have been transported to the Moon and the prospects of their recovery. The second mystery surrounds ‘Oumuamua, the first known interstellar object. Since its brief visit in 2017, there remains no consensus on its nature or origin. Dr Cabot will share his contributions to theory surrounding ‘Oumuamua and explain how impact craters or X-ray observations may help illuminate the nature of this enigmatic class of objects.

Speaker Bio:
Dr Samuel Cabot is a Junior Research Fellow at Peterhouse and postdoc at the Institute of Astronomy. He obtained his PhD from Yale University in 2023, which followed a master's degree from University of Cambridge and undergraduate degree from Princeton University. Sam studies planetary science topics spanning Solar System impact cratering and planetary dynamics, with particular interest in opportunities arising from lunar exploration and regolith characterization. He also researches exoplanet detection methods for radial velocity surveys, as well as high-resolution spectroscopy of exoplanet atmospheres.

New Materials for the Green-Energy Transition

Abstract:
Porous materials have great potential in the required green-energy transition, including their use in carbon capture and green-hydrogen economy. In particular, the building-block approach of novel porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has opened the possibility to synthesise a virtually infinite number of structures. This creates exciting opportunities, but also raises the question of how to identify and classify MOFs among the plethora of existing crystal structures. At the same time, experimental trial-and-error discovery of materials is not fast enough and therefore it is required to develop new methods. Given the flexibility offered by MOFs and similar reticular materials, we identify two critical questions: can we find a deterministic prediction for materials performance? And, can we translate these predictions to real materials and applications at scale?
Current computational and wet-lab advances on the design of new materials represent a significant step forward in their deployment in real-world industrial applications.
