Constantly learning to be a better coach to help athletes & coaches to achieve their best

The intake of legumes—beans, chickpeas, split peas, and lentils—may be the single most important dietary predictor of a long lifespan.

The longest living populations reside in the Blue Zones and not only have daily exercise and social support and engagement, but, nutritionally, they all center their diets around plant foods. The population with perhaps the highest life expectancy in the world doesn’t eat any meat at all—the California Adventist vegetarians.

Would just moving along the spectrum towards eating more plants and less animal foods actually improve lifespan? Study participants were given more points for eating plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, olive oil, and potatoes, and lost points for any animal fats, eggs, dairy, or any type of meat or meat products, including fish. Eating more plant foods, processed or not, resulted in higher scores and longer lives, compared with consuming any kind of animal products. The maximum score was 60, but even scoring just 40 or more was associated with a 40 percent drop in mortality.

This is evidence that increasing intake of plant-based foods and reducing consumption of foods from animal sources may offer a survival advantage for a longer life.

"THERE IS NO FAILURE IN SPORTS" 💪 Giannis Antetokounmpo delivers INSPIRING MESSAGE after Bucks exit! 29/09/2024

Check out this awesome lesson about failure. Giannis Antetokounmpo gives a powerful perspective on failure after the Milwaukee Bucks' unexpected exit from the NBA Playoffs. When asked if their season was a failure, Giannis rejects the idea, explaining that every setback is part of the journey towards success. He compares it to life: not every step is a win, but each one is a lesson. This is a great message for all of us and especially youth athletes in grassroots sport. Learning from losses, staying resilient, and understanding that progress isn’t always linear. Failure and losses are not final they are simply stepping stones toward growth and future victories.

Its great to be getting back into coaching young people again and I had a chat to a few the players over the weekend about the importance mutual respect and ensuring no one feels excluded.
For young athletes aged 10-13, mutual respect among teammates is more than just a nicety; it's a crucial component for their development and success on and off the field.
Mutual respect fosters a positive team environment, enhancing morale and cohesion, leading to improved performance.
It nurtures empathy and understanding, fostering strong interpersonal relationships and a supportive network.
Respect promotes effective communication and conflict resolution skills, crucial for navigating challenges both in sports and life.
It instils accountability and responsibility, as players hold themselves and others to high standards of conduct and performance.

I really rate these infographics from Believe Perform. Well worth printing, laminating and using as a coaching aid to let the players discuss among themselves how to conduct themselves in the team environment.

Mutual respect is the foundation of a respectful philosophy and the cornerstone of young athletes' growth, fostering teamwork, empathy, communication, and accountability.

Hi Everyone. London Marathon is a little under 12 weeks and I am proud and excited to announce that I will be "running" it to support Team Charlie, a charity set up in memory of Charlie Ilsley. Charlie was at primary school with my eldest who unfortunately in December 2020 lost his battle with the most high-grade brain tumour found in children.

For whatever reason those who know me know I like to do hard things and make hard things harder than they really need to be so I will be complete London Marathon in full fire kit with a Breathing apparatus set. Hard as this may sound I am always immediately humbled by people like Charlie (and his family) who preserve with bravery, positivity and stoicism through unimaginable physical and mental pain and challenges.

I appreciate any donation to help support children like Charlie and their families. Aside from donations you can also support by liking, sharing and interacting with Team Charlie posts and following the page to increase awareness of this incredibly important work.

Many Thanks

Wow. Too many sound bites and one liners to choose an out an out winner and many of them on their own would be unbelievable advice but my favourite is "Winning is being better today than you were yesterday......every day"

I think he also missed his calling as a comedian or ventriloquist......Thanks for the lesson.....Legend.

Good luck. Happy Coaching.

High-meat diets are not healthy.

Going “carnivore” might help some people to lose weight. Certain biomarkers can improve. But the long-term outcomes of high-meat diets likely to involve more medications, more hospital visits and maybe even a reduced life expectancy.

Anyone living with obesity or insulin resistance is already at increased risk of early death due to cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, or complications of type 2 diabetes. The evidence clearly shows that these risks are consistently magnified by a high meat diet.

By treating meat as an optional part of your diet and replacing it with healthy plant-based sources of nutrition, you are stacking the odds of better long term health in your favour.  Reducing the risk of multiple common health problems, now and for the future.

If you’re a doctor, don’t believe the influencer hype. Ignore the tweets! If you have a highly motivated patient who needs to gain control of their health, guide them away from high meat diets.

The best prescription? "Less meat, more plants”.

Always evidence-based. Citations are in the comments ⬇️
