Most people completely misunderstand “levels” in pronunciation.
You can have advanced grammar and vocabulary…
and still struggle to be understood.
And you can have simple English…
and be very easy to understand.
That’s because pronunciation doesn’t work in levels the way you think.
I’ve just explained how it actually works in this video:

In this part of the lesson, my student is working on /əʊ/ in the word “only”.
➡️ It’s detailed work that needs patience and flexibility. At this point in the lesson, I’m trying to pinpoint why “only” is so hard yet other similar words don’t seem to be.
Of course if every single word in English received this much attention, we’d never get anywhere 😃 but sometimes this is necessary

I was chatting to a non-native speaker last week. It was outside work, she was super interesting and I definitely wanted to hear what she had to say.
But then she pronounced “focus” so it sounded far more like “f🤐ck us” and it was so distracting I completely lost track of what she was saying.
I just didn’t know her well enough to laugh and correct her so I did that vague smile we do when we don’t want to seem rude.
Unless you have spent hours training your listening skills, it’s impossible to hear what sounds native speakers are reacting to.
