At Bovey....this week, it is officially autumn so we are going to be reading the leaf thief. Our number of the week is going to be 2. Throughout the week, the children will be able to explore our sensory autumnal tuff tray both inside and outside. These will have lots of autumn objects in. Whilst the children are exploring the tuff trays, we will be helping them to understand the season change and that they will expect to see the weather change, leaves change colour and fall off the trees. In the small world area, the children will be accessing arts and crafts resources, in which they can paint with sticks, leaves, acorns and conquers and then paint these objects too.



Last week has been national recycling week so we have been learning all about the materials that we recycle. We have been organising them into materials in the ‘bins’ aswell as making a big recycling unit that the children can sort the materials out. The children have also participated in junk modelling in the construction area where they have decorated milk cartons, cardboard boxes and plastic bottles. they children had so much fun with the cardboard boxes, they turned them into robot heads!

At Whipton....At Whipton this week, our story of the week will be The Tiger Who Came to Tea, and the children will enjoy themed invitations to play such as making cups of tea in the water tray and exploring orange and black stripy rice just like the tiger. We will also spend lots of time in the role play area using our imagination to retell the story.

Our number of the week will be 5, and our Makaton sign will be tiger.

Our weekly focus will be on our Golden Rules, helping the children practise good sitting, good listening, walking feet, kind hands and being kind to their friends as they build positive relationships.

Last week, we absolutely loved learning all about construction; the children were so engaged using the diggers, exploring textured trays filled with cereals and oats, and building both indoors and outdoors. They experimented with stacking, balancing and designing their own creations, showing fantastic curiosity, teamwork and imagination throughout a brilliant week of hands‑on learning.

At Budlake....this week our book will be Kippers pet shop, our sign is dog and our number of the week will be will be 2. In the creative area we are going to be remaking pets we have at home or a pet we would like to have. We will explore various resources and materials to do so such as, pictures of different pets to help us see what we want to make, fur-cotton wool, straw, patterned paper, tissue paper, feathers etc. Outside in our tray we are going to have a sensory animal tray. It will have lots of different types of animals/pets like sea creatures, bugs, farm, safari and small world animals with bran flakes, oats, straw, mud and lentils. We will need to use our imagination to help us create scenes and role play whilst using all our senses to look, feel and smell what’s in our tray. This will also help to create conversations and discussions around families, the pets we have and the world around us.



Last week we loved our pea themed water tray where we squashed the evil peas into the water using different mashers and spoons. Lots of fun was had when we made our own superheroes out of fresh vegetables, tissue paper, paint and googly eyes. We used our creative skills to help us and even had a go at retelling the story at the same time. We loved playing games this week especially dinosaur dominos and the shopping list game.

At Bovey....Next week, our number of the week is going to be number 1 and our book that we will be reading is called ‘recycling’.

For our activities inside, the children will be given the chance to take part in activities in the construction area around junk modelling with recycling materials. They will also be given the chance to build with the recycling materials.

Outside in the garden, we will be exploring what objects we recycle and identify what materials they are. We will also sort them into materials to put out for recycling.

These activities will give the children ideas around how we recycle house hold items and what materials we recycle.



This week, we have been reading the highway rat and our number of the week has been 5. During the week, the children have enjoyed lots of small world play in the small world area.

At Honiton....Next week our book of the week is Tickly octopus and our curiosity cube theme is sea life. Our number of the week will be 2. Inside we’re going to be exploring playdough and using different cutters, rollers and scoring tools to make our own sea life animals. Outside we are going to have our very own under the sea water tray. The water will be blue and green and we will have different sea animals and objects such as seaweed, sand and rocks. In our curiosity cube we are going to have a real fish (not living). We will be discussing what animals live in the sea and what else we might find in the sea. On Friday we are going to be dissecting our fish so we can take a closer look at it.

Our focus for the week will be independence at mealtimes. We are going to be encouraging the use of cutlery, supporting the children to be independent in pouring their own water from a small jug, serving themselves from the second’s platters and scrapping their plates when they have finished.



This week we have been learning ‘all about me’. We’ve discussed what we can see in a mirror when looking in it and drawing self portraits and we’ve also been using the playdough to make different facial features. We’ve been practicing our fine motor skills with activities such as threading.

At Budlake....Next week our book of the week is going to be Supertato and our sign of the week will be superhero. In our malleable materials area, we will be making our own supertato’s and superheroes out of vegetables, tissue paper, googly eyes, pipe cleaners etc. we will use this activity to help us talk about what a healthy diet is and why vegetables are so good for us, use our expressive arts and design skills to come up with our won superhero’s and to be able to recall and retell parts of the story using our creations to help us. Outside in the garden we will be improving motor skills with our green pea water tray. We will have frozen peas in green water and use mashers, spoons and other tools to squash and capture the evil pea.



This week we have loved dressing up and picking out what to wear, practicing our independence by learning to change ourselves. We had a go at hanging up clothes outside on the washing line, using pegs to secure them. We enjoyed decorating our own bears by sticking clothes on them to get them dressed. We have so much fun making marks and sandcastles in the and pit. We were super lucky and even got to have a closer look at our stick insects to see how much they’ve grown! We also had a go at baking some short bread which we absolutely loved doing.

At Whipton....Next week, we will be learning all about construction. Our book of the week will be Wheels by sally Sutton. Our number of the week will be 4, and our Makaton sign will be ‘to build’. The children will explore a range of construction materials and tools, using them to support counting, sorting, building and imaginative play. Indoors, they will design and create their own structures, experiment with balancing and stacking, and use small world resources to bring their ideas to life.



Our weekly focus will be on strengthening the children’s fine motor skills. We will support them to use tools safely, manipulate small objects, practise careful hand movements and develop the coordination needed for early writing and self‑help skills. We will continue encouraging the children to share resources, take turns and work alongside and with their friends, building positive cooperative play throughout the week.



Last week, we absolutely loved learning all about The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children were fascinated by the caterpillar’s journey and enjoyed exploring all the different foods from the story through counting, sorting, tasting and imaginative play.



On Wednesday 16th September, Concept Photography will be visiting the nursery from 9:30am to 11:00am. Parents of children who do not usually attend on Wednesdays are very welcome to bring them in during this time so they can have their photos taken. If your child is attending that day and you would like them to wear a different outfit for their photos

At Budlake....this week our book of the week is going to be What should I wear Huggle Buggle Bear? And our sign will be Bear. In the home corner we will be having a go at choosing out what we want to wear and dressing ourselves, picking from shoes and dressing up clothes. As autumn is also commencing, we will be talking about appropriate clothes we might need- welly boots, coats, hats etc. We will learn skills like independence, listening to, and following instructions and team work. In the creative area we will do lots of decorating, cutting and sticking. We will have our own teddies bears and decorate them with printed out clothes, googly eyes buttons and pipe cleaners that we can cut out and stick on to make our own Huggle Buggle Bears which will help to develop our fine motor and scissor skills. In the garden we’ll be developing our fine motor skills further -as that’s what we are working on- and understanding more about the world with our home-made washing line where we can peg and unpeg clothes.



Last week our story was Peace at Last. We enjoyed getting cosy putting our teddies to sleep learning how to have quiet time while calming ourselves down and regulating emotions by ourselves. We loved playing lots of games outside in the garden like ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’? and sleeping lions and practicing safe climbing. We all had so much fun and got really involved in leaf printing this week!

At Whipton....this week, we will be continuing our exciting bug theme with one of our favourite stories, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Our number of the week will be 3, and our Makaton signs will be butterfly and caterpillar.

Throughout the week, the children will explore all the delicious foods from the story, using them to support counting, sorting, tasting and imaginative play. Outdoors, we will be getting creative with clay, shaping and moulding it to make our very own bugs inspired by the caterpillar’s journey.

The children will also have opportunities to explore colours, patterns and textures, learn about the life cycle of a butterfly, and enjoy movement, music and storytelling linked to our favourite creepy crawlies.



Our weekly focus will remain centred on supporting the children to play cooperatively with one another. We will continue encouraging them to share resources, take turns, play alongside and with their friends, and begin working together during activities.



Last week, we absolutely loved learning all about Norman’s New Shell! The children were fascinated by Norman’s colourful shell and enjoyed exploring patterns, textures and lots of creative bug‑themed activities. It was wonderful to see their imaginations come alive as they designed their own shells and took part in sensory play inspired by the story.

With so many of our school leavers having had their last days I wanted to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you- thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child’s early years- we have loved every moment (well almost every moment!) Being trusted to take care of the most precious things in your lives is an honour and a pleasure… so thank you for choosing Little Ones!

So many of our children come to us as tiny babies barely even able to sit up on their own… and now we are waving them off as funny, happy, clever, knowledgeable, confident little people with amazing personalities, full of life and excitement for what lies ahead. Your place in our hearts has been firmly cemented and we will always remember you!

Thank you to all our amazing parents for their gifts, cards and kind comments- we really do appreciate them all. Please don’t forget us… we love having visits… and love to see pictures of our Little Ones in their school uniforms!!

I found this poem on 'Emma's blog' last week and thought it was very relevant! (Tissues needed!)

Dear Teacher,
“I know you’re rather busy, first day back, there’s just no time, a whole new class of little ones and this one here is mine.

I’m sure you have things covered and have done this lots before, but my boy is very little, he hasn’t long turned four.

In his uniform this morning, he looked so tall and steady, but now beside your great big school I’m not quite sure he’s ready.

Do you help them eat their lunch? Are you quick to soothe their fears? And if he falls and hurts his knee will someone dry his tears?

And what if no-one plays with him? What if someone’s mean?What if two kids have a fight and he’s caught in between?

You’re right, I have to leave now it’s time for him to go I’m sure he’ll learn so much from you, things that I don’t know.

Yes, I’m sure they settle quickly, that he’s fine now without me, I know he has to go to school, it’s just so fast.

You see, it seems like just a blink ago I first held him in my arms, it’s been my job to love, to teach, to keep him safe from harm.

So, when I wave goodbye in a moment and he turns to walk inside, forgive me if I crumple into tears of loss and pride.

I know as I give him one more kiss and watch him walk away, that he’ll never again be wholly mine as he was before today “

Dear Parent,
I understand that you are scared to wave your child goodbye and leave him in a teacher’s hands – don’t worry if you cry!

I’m used to weeping parents, it’s hard to leave I know. But it’s time to share him (just a bit) to help him learn and grow.

Let me reassure you that I’ll give your child my best, I’ll wipe his tears, soothe his fears and change his dirty vest!

If your darling child is full of cold I’ll blow their nose all day, just like you, I’ll care for them in a special way.

I’ll treat him like I would my own I’ll catch him from a fall and if there is ANY problem I’ll be sure to tell you all.

It’s true he’ll grow to love us, they’ll talk of school a lot, it doesn’t mean they hate you and that you should lose the plot! I’ll tell you a secret…That when your child is here, they talk to me as much of you of this please have no fear.

You’ll always be their mother, whilst teachers come and go, to them you are their number one, this I truly know.

Soon you’ll see some changes, in your little girl or boy, they’ll become more independent and to see this, it’s a joy!

I’ll teach them all I have to give, to share, climb and to write, but to you they safely will return to tuck them in at night.
