Five countries. One week. The same move, every time.

This week, five governments used five different tools, courts, laws, and tribunals, to do the same thing: narrow who's allowed to speak. In Russia, opposition politician Lev Shlosberg got 11 years for opposing the war in Ukraine. In Bangladesh, a tribunal built to try war criminals turned on journalists for asking questions at a press conference. Israel passed a law stripping the attorney general's power to say no, timed to take effect after the election, not before. In Brazil, a court ordered a reporter to name his sources, in an order issued by a justice defending a colleague under scrutiny.

None of these countries banned an opposition party this week. They didn't need to.

Trump posted a map this week labelling the Strait of Hormuz “NEW U.S. Territory” — and it’s tempting to call that authoritarian expansion in real time. I’m not going to. This is the same cycle as Greenland, the Venezuela, Canada as the “51st state,” Gaza as a “Riviera”: big claim, unanimous expert pushback, then nothing enacted. No treaty. No proclamation. Legal scholars call it flatly impossible. The story that actually mattered this week happened in the same interview: a bombing threat against Oman, a real mediating ally, with reported real anger in response. I’d rather be the account that’s calibrated than the one that’s loud. Where do you think the line should sit between “rhetoric worth flagging” and “rhetoric worth ignoring”?

A year ago, National Guard troops arrived in Washington DC under a declared "crime emergency." They're still there — 4,636 of them, at an estimated additional $1.4 billion through January 2029. A federal judge ruled the deployment unlawful in November. It kept running anyway, because an appeals court stayed that ruling pending appeal. Compare that to Chicago (blocked by the Supreme Court) and Portland (permanently blocked by a federal judge) under the exact same legal theory, and you get a patchwork, not a single rule. DC is a genuinely harder case — it has no governor to bypass — so this isn't simply "the same illegal thing happening slower." It's a longer emergency than anyone can point to an actual emergency to justify. How long should a temporary emergency power get to run before someone has to prove it's still an emergency?

Long before the campaign trail, Trump was already writing the script.

'The Art of the Deal' sold the idea that anyone could live his lifestyle if they just worked hard enough — ghostwritten by Tony Schwartz, approved by Trump himself. His ownership of Miss World let him surround himself with the world's most beautiful women, cementing a version of masculinity built on wealth and status. The Apprentice turned him into a straight-talking boardroom disciplinarian, and "you're fired" became a global catchphrase. His WWE stint introduced him to kayfabe — the wrestling art of never breaking character — a skill he never really put down. The MAGA cap turned his supporters into walking billboards. And in 2024, he took the whole act onto the podcast circuit, sitting down with Theo Von, Joe Rogan, and Andrew Schulz to look funny, relatable, and unmistakably one of the guys.

None of it happened by accident. Every appearance, every catchphrase, every red hat has been building the same image for decades.

Attacking Communism Is Nothing New 🔴

Every generation of American power has reached for the same word when it needed an enemy.

Hoover spent nearly five decades running the FBI's hunt for "communists" — a label he stretched from suspected Soviet agents to unionists, civil rights leaders, and Martin Luther King Jr. himself. McCarthy took it to Congress and the press, ruining thousands of lives on accusations he never had to prove. And in the room with him the whole time was a young lawyer named Roy Cohn — who later passed everything he learned about destroying opponents on to his protégé, Donald J. Trump.

Now, with the economy struggling, the Iran war unresolved, and the Epstein files hanging over his presidency, Trump and his advisors appear to be reaching for the same old playbook — branding the Democrats and their popular policies "communist" ahead of the midterms.

The word hasn't changed in a hundred years. Neither has the reason it gets used.
