Research news!
A new research project led by the School of Infection & Immunity Dr Rebecca McHugh and SBOHVM's Dr Rheinallt Jones has been awarded £22,000 in funding from the Hannah Dairy Foundation.
The project will address neonatal calf diarrhoea (calf scour), which is the most common disease affecting young dairy calves in the UK, and a major concern for animal welfare and farm productivity.
The work will explore harnessing naturally beneficial gut bacteria to prevent disease and investigate the role of Streptomyces bacteria in the calf gut, tracking microbiome development from birth through weaning.
By understanding how these beneficial bacteria colonise and function, the research aims to inform the development of practical probiotic strategies to enhance calf health, resilience, and long-term productivity.

We were saddened to hear the news this week that Lyall Petrie died on Tuesday 5 May 2026. Dr Lyall Petrie graduated from what was the University of Glasgow Veterinary School in 1969. He was appointed lecturer in Large Animal Medicine in the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow, in 1973. He completed a PhD in 1980 on "Factors affecting neonatal calf survival and subsequent growth rate", before joining the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan in 1985. Dr Petrie's research interests included neonatal calf diarrhoea and bovine lameness and problems of the bovine hoof. In addition, Lyall was a very good endurance athlete, competed in many long distance events and had very respectable marathon time of around 2h 30 mins. Our thoughts and condolences are with Lyall’s family and friends.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that Professor Norman Wright died this morning, Sunday 3 May 2026, in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
A proud Glasgow graduate of 1962, Norman spent a year in practice in Kilmarnock, before returning to the University to join the Department of Veterinary Pathology. He carried out seminal work in viral pathogenesis and glomerulonephritis in the dog. In 1975, at just 36 years old, he was appointed Professor of Anatomy and later served with great distinction as Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine from 1991- 1999.
Norman’s legacy will endure through the many careers he shaped and the countless lives he touched. His passing leaves a profound void - the world is a much duller place without him.
Details of funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.
