I'll be happy when....
I lose weight
I am in a smaller body
I lose body fat...

How often do you say these things to yourself?

Postponing to fully participate in life until you feel happier in your body?

As opposed to living your life the way you want to live it now, finding fulfilment in things outside of controlling your food and your body?

When you say no to all the things you enjoy, you will feel unfulfilled and unhappy

How had this been serving you so far?

Perhaps feeling struck in a cycle of dieting and overeating
Exercising to burn calories
More emotional eating to fill the void and emptiness
Finding purpose in controlling your food and diet

Imagine if you could change this narrative to:

I will live my life to the fullest now , in the body I am in right now.

Likelihood is you will feel happier and more
fulfilled 💃🏻

Have more headspace and energy to enjoy other areas of your life

Finding a balance with food that works for you & implementing healthful habits that make you feel good physically and mentally - because you want to.

Often when we experience an urge to binge eat, it can be a sign that we have some unmet needs. A very common one is the need for belonging & connection.
Although nurturing our relationships with others is very important

We often forget the most important relationship we have

The relationship with ourselves

This is your reminder to take a moment to check in with yourself

Are you living in alignment with your values?

You own values, not what others think of you or what the society tells us

Are you showing up as your authentic self?

When we don’t honour our wants & needs this can often show up as a feeling of loneliness

Food might then come to feel the void, whether it is binge eating or dieting to feel better

Instead choose authenticity. Put yourself first. Be more self-full and see what happens in your relationship with food too.

Being scared of experiencing an urge to binge eat can be a trigger in itself as this leads to:

Increased food preoccupation and constantly monitoring your environment for any cues

Increased anxiety which can keep you trapped in a fight or flight response - when we are not present we become more susceptible to any triggers and we are less able to use the conscious part of our brain to mindfully respond to these triggers / cues.

Inability to trust yourself that you can be safe and ride the wave of the urge.

Instead of labelling your days as good or bad which can feed into an all or nothing mentality you can see it as you riding the waves as they come.

Feedback to tune into your body and what you really need at that moment.

Honouring your hunger
Meeting your emotional needs
Showing yourself compassion
Self-care & rest

if you struggle with your relationship with food, is likely that you also struggle with your relationship with your body.

Maybe you gained some weight as a result of disordered eating. So your immediate reaction is to start dieting, to ‘fix’ your body so you can feel happy again.

although this can provide a short term relief and help us feel in control again, we mask disordered eating with dieting.

We don’t get to heal our deeper wounds. What is causing the disordered eating. We are still susceptible to the underlying triggers.

every time something happens that causes you to feel insecure about your body - you try to cope by hiding or fixing your body

often not taking part in activities because our bodies don’t look a certain way.

fixing through dieting.

although healthful dieting can help us optimise our body composition which can increase our confidence,

there’s a big difference

between using healthful dieting (which includes holistic coaching & support) as a tool to optimise appearance

versus solely relying on dieting to feel better in our body and about ourselves

the latter is flimsy - it can be taken away any time - when we receive a comment, when we compare ourselves to unrealistic ideals, when life gets in the way or priorities change and our body might change as a result.

instead we support our clients to build unwavering confidence and self-esteem by helping them embrace their whole self

realizing that their body and appearance is a tiny part of their identity

by shifting focus from how their body looks to what their body allows them to do

practising body appreciation & gratitude

so even when they get triggered and feel insecure, they have a strong basis to return to.

They know they are still worthy no matter what their inner critic says or what their body looks like. they adapt & evolve based on the circumstances.

"I can't keep cake in the house, I have no control and end up binge eating"

Binge eating triggers are complex and vary from person to person.

A common trigger we see in a lot of our clients is being around certain foods that they have associated with a binge.

Over time they have stopped trusting themselves that they can be around these foods, and the belief that "I have no self control" is very strong.

Our brains love what we call in psychology "confirmation bias" : looking for evidence to reconfirm the core beliefs we already hold about ourselves - we crave familiarity even when it's no longer serving us.

Removing foods from the house can certainly provide a temporarily relief from binge eating but is it a long term solution?

Our advise would be no. Because the moment you find yourself around this food again, you are likely to overeat mindlessly or binge eat.

Instead we help our clients to learn to trust themselves again, practice mindful eating, honour their hunger and fullness cues & practice unconditional permission to eat all foods.

So over time they will be able to be around any food and choose what they want to do next from a place of empowerment and trust.

GROWTH MINDSET & EATING BEHAVIOURS

A big part of our person-centred coaching is helping our clients develop a growth mindset

Which as a result can really help reduce the all-or-nothing mentality we have around our eating and lifestyle habits.

A fixed mindset is ingrained in most of us due to previous conditioning from past experiences, our upbringing and cultural norms.

Cultivating a growth mindset and reprogramming old fixed beliefs takes time and conscious effort.

So what is a growth mindset?

It means seeing mistakes and setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning, believing in one's capabilities, focusing on the process rather than the results, being self-compassionate & welcoming challenges

All attitudes that if we learn how to cultivate them, will help us improve our relationship with food and our body image.

When someone has a fixed mindset about their body weight, failure and setbacks are seen not just as a deficiency in that particular attribute or skill—not losing weight—but as a reflection of their ineptitude as a person.

When someone has a growth mindset about body weight, they view setbacks in their journey as productive challenges and learning opportunities, not affecting their self-worth or self-belief.

Believing you can change and being able to weather setbacks is a major advantage when it comes to implementing new habits.

‘’I will feel happier when I get this body’’

then you might lose weight, body fat, build muscle
yet you are still not feeling happy.

or maybe you do for a while until the food preoccupation & obsession starts
trying all you can to maintain this new physique
counting calories, over-exercising, saying no to social events etc
constantly comparing yourself and body to other people’s physique.

this is not to say that there are people that will feel much happier and confident in themselves and body when they improve their body composition.

however this confidence and happiness won't purely come from their appearance.
good coaching focuses on holistic health
our physical, mental, social, emotional & spiritual aspects of our life.

helping our clients see that their worth is inherent
that they are much more than a body
a whole complete human being
that appearance is just a tiny piece of the puzzle of who makes them, them.

so we are resilient
our bodies change all the time.
when factors such as circumstances, values, priorities, environment and activity change we as humans tend to adapt.
our bodies adapt in response too.
& this is completely normal.

you get to set goals from a healthy place
a place of compassion towards yourself
overall self-care which will improve your body composition as a result too
a byproduct of adaptive habits that come from you caring for yourself and your body.
