We're currently working on the contexts and finds archive from an excavation that was carried out on the site of Dane Ghyll Camp (sadly not excavated by us) and we're hoping to find some descendants of Polish families who lived at Dane Ghyll Camp and maybe have some photos of what life in the camp was like!

We are reaching out to the sons, daughters and grandchildren of the Polish families who lived at Dane Ghyll, as well as the wider Barrow and Cumbrian community, to help us preserve their memories.

For the Polish families who came to Cumbria after the war, Dane Ghyll was more than just a resettlement camp. It was a place where lives began again — where friendships were made, children grew up, families were raised and memories were created.

Many of the people who lived there are no longer with us.

But their stories survive in their children and grandchildren — and in the memories of the local community.

Quick site visit this morning to just outside Dalton-in-Furness, an opportunity to have a quick look at the "beacon" at High Haume. Suggested as potentially a prehistoric burial mound, a Roman signal station or a medieval beacon, the monument itself is perhaps not as spectacular as the views across the Furness peninsula up into the lakes and across the Duddon Valley!

Quick site visit in Manchester today and an excuse to visit the Roman fort at Castlefield, now probably one the most striking juxtapositions of old and new in the country

It's always nice to see our finds on display - during a recent watching brief at Furness Abbey we recovered a number of tiles, probably used in the floors of the former Furness Abbey Hotel, made by Garrett Brothers of Staffordshire and dating from the 1860s. After confirming with English Heritage we were able to donate some examples to the Apedale Heritage Centre for their collection, which is pretty impressive!

Something a little bit different, we're going to hold a series of monthly pop-up "Antiques Fairs" at the cottage during the normal opening hours on Sunday. The first will be on the 12th of July!

Great day out in the sun exploring the development of Far Houses Farm in the Duddon Valley with the
(only managed to get a photo as we were leaving the site!)

Excellent drying weather so have been sample processing all morning!

Lovely if windswept day out on the beach at Haverigg recording sediments and taking samples, hopefully to date putatively prehistoric footprints.
