Although I agree with much of this piece, its mjor flaw is that it fails to address how we can use observational, authentic formative assessment for accountability purposes in ECE in the way that n the way that EExBA &EExAT do. This kind of dataphobia unfortunately generates a justification for a test assessment by refusing to acknowlege any alternatives and relying on the simplistic slogan of 'reducing children to numbers'. Even the most complex tings sometimes have to be simplified in order to support initial understanding and neither EExBA, EExAT nor the EYFSP assume that the 'score' is anything more than a starting point for understanding.
We have shared a great 2 days CPD with Sue at Doha English Speaking School. We are very privileged that she came all this way to share her knowledge and experience with us. A very knowledgeable and inspiring lady who delivered completely 'Out of the Box'!

circle time podcast on Twitter 11/06/2023

Was honoured to be asked to record this podcast, and it was a pleasure to chat about curriculum with Glenn 😊

Let me know what you think

circle time podcast on Twitter “In this edition, Glenn talks to Early Years trainer, author and consultant Dr Sue Allingham (Teddy Edward may also have been there) about how the importance of the child seems to be forgotten in our confusion over what an early years curriculum should look https://t.co/t11u6feCfD”

This is a very important read. ‘Bucket Time’ as a universal panacea has always bothered me and Cheryl’s sums it all up for me. Her knowledge and informed approach has made me realise what was making me feel uncomfortable

Thank you Cheryl!

Last week I wrote a blog that provoked a lot of response.

Today I have written a follow up.

Later today I am flying out to Delhi to have the honour of working with the Early Childhood Development Forum - ECDF- and all these people in real life. We all met for the first time remotely during the first lockdown. And we are group of like minded professionals
On Wednesday we are launching the book that we all contributed to last year, and then on Saturday we are running a workshop.

In between we are going on some tours, and seeing the Taj Mahal. Who knew, when I took the leap of faith into becoming an independent consultant, that such amazing opportunities would occur?

Early Years is truly escaping the box!

This well timed webinar is just what we need. At a time when the work we do with the youngest children is being directed down an increasingly narrow path, Rae Pica throws us a lifeline.
The essential work of early childhood education is undervalued, underpaid, and
overlooked. We’re moving away from active, creative, play-based joyful learning, as young children face increasing pressure to perform, deliver, and meet academic standards.
These conflicts risk pushing brilliant early educators out of the profession, and deprive children of that essential, organic curiosity that ought to define our earliest years.

Something’s got to give. But what? That’s what Rae Pica is here to answer. It is an absolute pleasure to be asked to promote this event

In this free webinar, brought to you by Famly, we’ll explore:
• The 4 ‘myths’ that have pushed ECE away from play-based, creative
learning
• How this shift has affected children and early educators
• What you can do to fight for more funding, respect and exploratory play

Join Rae Pica and moderator Aaron Hathaway at 2 PM EST / 6 PM GMT on
Tuesday, March 21st for a conversation about a bolder future for early educators.
Bring questions, frustrations, hopes and dreams

Brain-SET educational training 06/03/2023

The video link below takes you to a session that I was honoured to be part of. During the first lockdown I was fortunate to meet - via zoom - Dr Kathryn Murray. It was clear that we had very similar thinking about pedagogy in Early Childhood. We have since become good friends even though we have never met and live on opposite sides of the world.
When Kathy asked me if would like to be trained by her so that I could become an accredited Brain-SET trainer, then I jumped at the chance.

Brain-SET is an approach which Kathy has developed over several years. It is rooted in understanding emotional wellbeing, neuroscience, and how environments affect thinking. SET stands for 'safety, emotion, and thinking'. As you know these things are at the root of my work too.

Through the accreditation process I have also met Kavita Tanna, and the three of us appear in the video talking about the approach and why it is important

Every child is entitled to a developmentally informed learning environment

Brain-SET educational training Brain-SET is a training program that shines the light on the importance of aligning brain development with the design of the environment.

Really enjoyed working with The Peterborough School yesterday. A lively day full of discussion, reflection, laughter and playing. Yes, we played as we applied some thinking about interactions, teaching, learning, the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning and the Overarching Principles.

Vital to remember this -

A Unique Child
Each child is unique, and while we can be guided by an understanding of some general patterns of development from pre-birth into early childhood, progression is uneven and unfolds differently for each individual child.
The complex differences for each child mean the pathways toward maturity should be seen more as dancing around a ballroom than climbing a ladder.
A child’s growth, development and learning are interrelated in complex ways from the moment of conception all the way through infancy to early childhood and beyond.
Experiences during the early years strongly influence a child’s future development, as development and learning build on what has already been acquired
(Birth to Five Matters p18)

Did you know that Bespoke Packages are not only a Christmas thing?

Take a look at my short clip (perhaps when you need to escape the Christmas Chaos for a few minutes!) and get in touch so we can unwrap your needs for the New Year!

Please note: My Bespoke Packages are not just for Christmas

So 2022 came out of the box and disappeared so quickly! I have worked with so many different people in different places this year - virtually and in real life. It has been such a pleasure to be on the road again working with people at conferences, training and in schools and settings, but being able to work in a hybrid way is so powerful as I can be in more than one place on a day without having to travel.
Bookings for 2023 are filling up fast with a mixture of conferences, training, school and setting consultancy along with on line sessions. Will I be meeting you?
In the meantime -
Seasons Greetings, Happy Christmas, and Happy New Year! Take everything out of the box and unwind😀

Such a pleasure to have spent the end of the week working with Early Years teams in Flintshire. We have been working on the Leuven Scales and were unpicking what we really mean by 'involvement'. Wonderful to be working with everyone in real life, having only met virtually before.
Many thanks to the Flintshire Early Entitlement Team for their welcome and kindnesses! And the laughs when IT let us down :-)

23/11/2022

Really looking forward to going live at 7pm with a presentation for Childminders all about what is meant by 'curriculum'. Thanks to My CPD Group for asking me to present to the Childminders Club :-)

18/10/2022

Looking forward to working with teams from Bridgend in Wales today. We will be doing the first of three sessions on the Leuven Scales of Wellbeing and Involvement. Today I am doing a general overview of the 'what, why and how' these are a useful tool. This session finishes with a gap task to prepare for Session 2 on Wellbeing. A further gap task will feed into Session 3 on Involvement, which pulls all three sessions together

I'm really looking forward to working with this great group of people again! So many important things to discuss and reflect on when we were together at the Midlands Childcare and Education Expo, so a virtual summit is a great opportunity to continue talking about this important subject.

Will we see you there?

What a wonderful day with Devon Education Services! Reaffirming the joy of Early Years. So many great messages and became the word of the day. Thanks to the very welcoming team for making us so feel so looked after. It was great to work with Jamal Carly-Campbell again, and brilliant to meet Ben Kingston-Hughes and Dave McPartlin. Let’s do it again sometime!

27/09/2022

Was delighted to present the Childminding Business of the Year Award at Nursery World Awards on Saturday!

19/09/2022

Just seen this. And it’s made me wonder why these signs are still used.
Many years ago I stopped using them in my own classes because we realised that children regulated their own play in spaces. We also realised that play would be restricted if we limited the numbers.

If we say only 4 in the home corner what happens if you are used to a family of 6? With 2 cats?

What if you want to share your dough board and tools with a friend when all the seats are taken?

One of the most significant areas that needs reflection is outside. Requiring children to queue and restricting numbers to use climbing equipment or ‘trim trails’, slides etc just causes unnecessary waiting around when the whole point is to be active. Children in parks don’t do this. Safe practice is one thing, but restricting play, experimenting, activity and creativity are another

Just a word of warning … if I see these signs or anything like them as I travel around, I’m taking them down.

Any questions? No? Good.

Hard to believe, but yesterday I celebrated six years as an independent consultant. Back then I don't think I would have believed it if I had been told quite how many opportunities and projects I would become involved in. It's hard work, but so exciting with something new to think about every week.
I have made so many new friends and colleagues in this country and overseas as I take Early Years out of the box it's constantly being packed into.
We must never lose sight of the unique child who does not, and should not be made to, fit in a box. The sky is the limit which is why I'm delighted to be chairing this panel at the Coventry Childcare and Education Expo on September 24th.
Crucial to our role is to be understanding, noticing and listening adults. We have to tune in to each child - positive communication is key
Looking forward to a lively discussion!

Early Years has really been out of the box this week. I've been on lots of trains and working with lots of people. My job is such a privilege.

I'm on a train now heading north to speak at this event tomorrow. Looking forward to unpacking and unpicking the Early Years Curriculum. And demonstrating that developmentally informed teaching and learning isn't possible through packages and programmes. Keeping Early Years in a box simply won't work.

We are hitting a target, but missing the point

07/03/2022

My work colleague today is purrfect...

03/03/2022

I'm off to Childcare and Education Expo in London tomorrow. Looking forward to catching up with friends and colleagues and hearing some great talks.
Will you be there? Say 'hi' if you see me!
