VAI. When you think you’ve got nothing left, you find just a little more.

Sometimes it’s about staying with the problem a little longer, finding one more frame, one more breath, one more way through. Sometimes progress is just one push away.

Breathing space.

Our training ground is a Japanese-designed architectural sanctuary for martial arts, created to sit in harmony with the nature around it — in this case, Strawberry Hill’s woodland.

The matspace sits quietly among the trees, with a deep sprung mat designed for focused training.

Is a Blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seen as the last stage of the journey…or is it just the beginning?

Coral belts. Red belts. What a rarity. Less than 100 on our planet. Individuals who live their gentle lives around learning, teaching, noticing, deeply understanding and refining Jiu-Jitsu.

Red and Black Belt (7th Degree): Requires a minimum of 31 total years spent as a black belt and a minimum age of 50.

Red and White Belt (8th Degree): Requires an additional 7 years of service after the 7th degree, making it even rarer.

Most of us just want to get to the next belt up. Some are in a rush, many will give up.

But for the lifelong practitioner there is no rushing toward a finish line. No attempt to try and “complete” the art. BJJ is an infinite Ocean after all.

Just staying curious long enough for the art to keep revealing itself.

Maybe the real achievement isn’t just a blackbelt but a life of longevity. Quality of movement and quality of mind ❤️🖤

The Art of Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t always have to be fast, frantic, or aggressive.

It’s actually the perfect martial art for mastering new skills through timing, control, connection and understanding the details.

At VAI, we believe in training with intention — learning to move well and using our intellect to keep progressing for the long term.

Train for life, not just the round.

Trial classes available, DM for more.

First stripe is the sweetest 🥋✨

Tom Hardy was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while preparing for Warrior in 2011. What began as training for a role became something much more enduring.

Carlos played a formative role in those early years, training Tom from white belt through to purple belt. Tom would often train for hours, almost every day, developing the foundations of a genuine love for the art. Carlos also cornered at his first two REORG competitions.

In 2022, Tom began quietly entering tournaments under his real name, Edward Hardy. He won gold at the REORG Open in Wolverhampton, then competed again in Milton Keynes a few weeks later and won his division there too.

There was no celebrity bracket or exhibition match. He entered simply as another competitor, testing himself alongside everyone else who had turned up to compete.

His relationship with jiu-jitsu also became closely connected to REORG, which uses BJJ and physical training to support military personnel, veterans and emergency-service workers. He remains involved with the organisation as a patron.

As his love for the art grew, Tom spread his wings—training around the world with some of the greatest minds in jiu-jitsu, including John Danaher, Tom DeBlass and Mikey Musumeci.

But the first stripe will always be special.
