After the government's announcement about school closures, it is with a heavy heart that we must admit defeat and cancel Easter Bike Camp. We hope you stay well during these difficult times.

Woke up to this lovely email from a Bike Camp mum: We had tried to teach R (5 years old) a number of times to ride her bike with very little success. In 3 mornings you have got her cycling independently with a zest for more!
It is such a delight to see her whizzing around and this now means that the whole family can go out cycling - a real weekend game changer. We are over the moon.
Thank you for helping her reach this awesome child hood milestone - with no back breaking bending for her parents!
Last few spaces remaining for Easter Bike Camp. Going, going . . .
Amazing to hear about the life of Margaret Calvert OBE who designed the roadsigns we're still using (and teaching to Bike Campers) today.
Margaret Calvert OBE, OP circa 1951 to 1953
While some of you may not have heard of the name of this week’s OP Friday, Margaret Calvert, all of you will be familiar with her large and invaluable body of work, the creation of a signage system for Britain’s roads.
Born in 1936 in South Africa, Margaret moved to the UK in 1950. Here she joined St Paul’s Girls’ School before going to study illustration at the Chelsea College of Art where she was taught by graphic designer Jock Kinneir.
After graduation she was asked by Kinneir to work on new signage at Gatwick Airport. This was followed by being asked to work by him on the new M1 motorway, which also involved them creating new typefaces. The motorway was opened in 1958, by which point they became business partners. In 1963, the pair were asked to design signage for all British roads as the status quo was confusing and dangerous. They created the standardised, distinctive colour-coding, and use of upper and lower case letters. Of note, the girl in the “children crossing” sign was based on Margaret herself.
After this, they worked on British Rail, BAA, the NHS, and directional signs for the British Army.
In 2004, she was awarded an honorary degree by the University of the Arts, London. In 2016, she was appointed OBE for services to typography and road safety. She was also nominated as one of the women of the century on Radio 4’s Today programme. The road signs design has lasted over 60 years, a testament to their clarity.
Just 1 month until Bike Camp! There are still a few places left at both venues, so book now to avoid disappointment. https://thekidsbikecamp.co.uk/bookings

One way we're keeping cool at Bike Camp in Orleans Park School this summer. Another is our lovely air-conditioned cabin.
Lots of kids’ bikes for sale just in time for the holidays.
It's our last day of taking in bikes between 1 and 6 pm. (Thursday). We've got 100 bikes already to sell Friday (children's) and Saturday (adult). Good luck to our willing hard working volunteers.
