Kumon encourages children to think for themselves 12/10/2023

At Kumon, we want children to have the ability and confidence to be able to think for themselves; both now, at university and for the rest of their lives.

Increasingly in today's world, using their existing knowledge to form and try out hypotheses is a required skill that will also set them in good stead across all academic subjects.

From studying with Kumon they will learn to make judgements based on their own logic, and we believe every child, regardless of age or school year, is able to do this with practice.

Praising effort Vs intelligence 08/09/2023

One of the world’s experts in the study of motivation, Dr. Carol Dweck has spent the last forty years looking at why and how people achieve their potential—or don’t. Her studies reveal how praise affects a growth mindset.

In her early studies, Dweck gave 400 students a simple puzzle to tackle. After the puzzle was completed, students were each individually given six words of praise. Half were praised for intelligence: "Wow, you must be really smart!" while the other half were praised for effort: "Wow, you must be hard working!"

The differences in outcome for the two groups of students who received the subtly altered phrases of praise were astounding.

You can read more about why it matters in how you praise people in our website article, link here.

Praising effort Vs intelligence Praising children when they share their answers, tackle new problems or participate has a significant impact on helping them build a positive self-image.
