Happy Chinese New Year! 😀
Our Reception and Year One pupils enjoyed decorating and painting plates to celebrate CNY!⭐
The Mall School
www.themallschool.org.uk Our mission is to create an environment that ignites the love of learning in children, through passion, joy, confidence and happiness.
Situated across two sites on Hampton Road in Twickenham, we are an independent school and nursery for children aged from 6 months to 11 years. We will achieve this by providing a supportive community and place to grow, where everyone has a voice. A place where true potential can be developed, whether it is academic, sporting, musical, dramatic or artistic.

Happy Chinese New Year! 😀
Reception, Year 1 and 2 enjoying playing with the skipping ropes, trikes and stuffed animals.😀
Our Reception children have been using the story ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ as a stimulus for their recent activities. The children have written about aliens with a focus on adjectives; measured aliens using unifix cubes and designed their own pair of pants for display outside the classroom. 😀
Last week in our new Art Rays Club the children made these fabulous penguins. The club takes place every Friday after school for children in Reception and Year 1.🐧⭐
If you would like your child to join, please email Ms Kane on [email protected].
2L have created fantastic scenes of birch trees in winter. They used different colours to create a sunset and using small brushes, they added snow-flakes. The shadows were formed with chalk. You can see their amazing work in the video! 😀⭐
Our recent Ensembles Concert was a huge success, showcasing 75 talented musicians from Years 3 to 6. The audience was treated to performances from the Year 3 Recorder Club, Year 4 Recorder Club, Year 5 Recorder Club, Year 4 Choir, Year 5 to 6 Choir, the String Orchestra, the Wind Band, the Samba Band and the Rock Band.⭐
We were delighted to welcome our new Headmaster, Mr Gosden, to accompany both the Year 4 Choir and Wind Band.⭐
Recently, it was 5S’s form assembly, which was all about growth mindset. The pupils gave excellent examples of how they had overcome their fears through a combination of determination, resilience and effort.
Through personal examples, song and dreadful jokes they explained how they had conquered their fears about sport, music and visits to the doctor.
We were also treated to their performance of Hall of Fame by ⭐️
Year 3 have finished their Mondrian inspired masterpieces! The children all took a slightly different approach to their artwork and the finished display outside their classroom is stunning.
Year 4 are learning about natural disasters and this term their topic is hurricanes. They learnt about the Saffir Simpson Scale and the damage that can be caused by a hurricane. To show their understanding of the topic, they all made public information posters on 'How to stay safe during a hurricane'.

Last week in our new Lego Club the children were thinking about their favourite ice creams and recreating them with Lego blocks. They looked delicious. The club takes place every Thursday after school for Reception to Year 2 and if you would like your child to join, please email Ms Kane on [email protected].
Year 6 have followed up their work on Volta and the voltaic pile battery by learning how Michael Faraday discovered the other way of generating electricity: by moving magnets near a coiled wire, or electromagnetic induction. Making an electric generator is a bit ambitious, but you can make a simple electric motor (Faraday’s other invention) in the classroom. It is fiddly and does not always work as planned, but it is exciting when the little coil of copper wire suddenly starts spinning round.
Year 1 have started a topic about space and have had great fun designing and making rockets and their own moon. They have had to construct cylinders and cones to carry out this task. They have been writing facts about the moon and learning how we get day and night.
Our popular senior schools fair returns on Saturday 16 March and we are delighted to be welcoming staff from 18 leading independent schools to meet local families. The event is aimed primarily at families with children in Year 4 and 5 and is an ideal opportunity to start finding out more about the 11+ admissions process.
This event is open to all families in the local area.
Free admission with refreshments available - we look forward to seeing you there.
Reception go to the library each week to explore and have a story time. On their last visit, they looked at storybooks on their own and in small groups before sitting together to listen to Mr Selby read to them.
We are holding a TASTER DAY for entry into Year 2 in September 2024 on Monday 26 February between 0845 and 1245.
Children will spend the morning with our Year 1 class, including a PE lesson in our sports hall. They will complete a number of short computerised tests but the emphasis is on them having a FUN day. Parents are invited to have coffee with the Headmaster when they drop their children off and can have a tour of the school with pupil guides.
See our website for more information https://www.themallschool.org.uk/admissions/other-year-groups/
Year 2 have been learning about money 💵💷🪙 discovering all the different coins we have in our currency and how to count it in units of pence and pounds!
Year 3 have been looking at the work of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, famous for his abstract paintings. Art that is abstract does not show things that are recognisable such as people, objects or landscapes. Instead artists use colours, shapes and textures to achieve their effect. Mondrian favoured geometric shapes in bold colours.
The children have been preparing their Mondrian inspired artwork, using masking tape to make the lines to create rectangles and squares. Next week they will paint them using primary colours to create a wonderful Mondrian effect. We can't wait to see the finished pieces.

Last week our younger pupils were treated to a fantastic and fun pantomime performance from The Pied Piper Theatre Company. They loved the heartwarming story of 'Can Bears Ski' about a little bear who is deaf and how with his dad they learnt how there are many ways to communicate love and to find your place in the world. A number of the cast were also hearing impaired and they taught the children how to say some words and phrases in sign language.
Year 6 have been learning how Alessandro Volta discovered how to generate a flow of electricity by inventing the battery and so revolutionised our lives. The boys have been making their own batteries, following the Voltaic Pile method, with over 2 volts achieved so far. In their next lessons, pupils will conduct electrolysis on salt water and see what chemical reactions are set in motion.
This term, Year 2 have started having a weekly library lesson! As well as enjoying spending time browsing our fantastic range of fiction and non-fiction titles they have been finding their way around how the library is organised so that they can identify books to take home and read with their parents.

The Mall is an independent prep school for boys age 4+. We are non-selective for boys who join us at the start of Reception; entry at all other points is subject to a successful assessment, including spending a day with us.
Our mission is to bring out the best in every boy. We believe that all boys have potential and that it is through inspirational teaching, small class sizes and excellent pastoral care that we can develop this potential. Our independence enables us to find the right senior school for every boy and we have an impressive record of success at securing places at, and scholarships to, a range of academically selective senior schools.
In March 2019 we received our first set of 11+ offers. Thirteen boys in Year 6 (40% of the cohort) have been offered 11+ places at Hampton, King’s College Wimbledon, St Paul’s Juniors or Westminster Under School. 30% received offers from a selective state grammar school including 7 boys who were offered places at Tiffin.
Headmaster, David Price, said: “We are extremely proud of all the boys in Year 6. The range of schools that they have been offered places to, in a year when there has been an increased demand for secondary places, is particularly pleasing and I know they are now looking forward to taking on the challenges and opportunities on offer at their senior schools. These results fully endorse the decision we made in 2017 to phase out Years 7 and 8 so that boys should leave the school at the end of Year 6 with the 2019 cohort being the first to do so.”
