🫠Some Surprising Things About Postpartum Recovery -

🫠Some Surprising Things About Postpartum Recovery If you’re in the early days of postpartum recovery (or preparing for it), you might be discovering a few things no one quite warned you about. While you knew birth would be intense, the journey after birth comes with its own surprises.

12/11/2024

How you manage the pauses between your labour surges can have a signifiant impact on your experience of birth. The more you can relax and recover in between, the more comfortable you will feel and the more effective the next surge will be. This is the time for your womb and your baby to rest. The quicker you can re-oxygenate your womb, the more energy and power it will have for the next surge.

This is ‘the recovery breath’. After the surge has finished, take a big sigh! Then close your lips softly back together and breathe slowly through your nose for a count of about 5 seconds in and 5 seconds out. Nose breathing helps your blood to more quickly oxygenate and makes it more available for the cells in your body, helping to refuel your womb. It is also a breath that is very calming for your nervous system.

In the BodyMind Birthing course you will learn not only WHY breathing is so valuable for birth (and parenting), but WHICH breathing techniques are most beneficial for the different phases of labour. Theory is one thing, practice makes all the difference. BodyMind Birthing classes are available in person and also pre-recorded online.

This is how powerful the mind is!!! Imagine how powerful your mind is during birth?

This simple yoga breath is great to do as stand alone practice or at the beginning of a yoga class. It helps you to connect to your baby & to consciously connect to your breath which can serve you very well during times of stress, through birth and parenting! Sometimes stress and anxiety can create muscle tension and can subconsciously restrict the full capacity of your breathing which can in turn affect your energy levels. This breath practice will help you to relax and regain breath capacity.

Find a comfortable seated pose with your back straight.
Bring your hands onto your belly, connecting to your baby. Take a moment to reflect on their stage of development and notice how you feel when you think about your baby.

Breathing in and out through your nose for a count of 5 seconds in & 5 seconds out, invite your awareness to the sensation of your belly moving as you breathe. Allow your belly to move forward when you inhale and softly back as you exhale. Continue for 1-min.

Then move your hands to your lower rib-cage around your bra strap with your thumbs pointing behind you. Notice as you breathe if you can feel your hands moving away from each other as you inhale and move back towards each other as you exhale. Continue for 1-min.

Lastly place your hands on your upper chest. As you breathe in, you are still breathing in your belly and your rib cage, but see if you can also feel the collar bones lift and drop with each breath too. Notice if you can feel your shoulder blades move. Continue for 1-min.

J-breath for birth.

This is a great breath and visualisation that is useful if you choose to have a vaginal examination during labour and can also be great for the pushing phase of birth.

Leaning slightly back (if you are having a vaginal examination, it’s likely your knees will be apart and your heels in, but in the pushing phase you may find it’s better to have your heels turned outwards wider than your hips as this makes more room in the pelvic outlet).

Breathe in through your nose and breathe out through softly pursed lips so your exhale is longer than your inhale. Imagine, as you’re breathing out, you are sending the breath down into your pelvis and out through your birth canal following the J-shaped funnel of your pelvic spaces. As you are breathing out, imagine all the soft tissue of your pelvis and pelvic floor becoming soft, wide and relaxed.

This will help you to relax if you are having a vaginal examination which can make it more comfortable.

In the pushing phase this breath will help with the downward movement of your baby and will enable you to push your baby down without holding your breath. Holding your breath and pushing is known as ‘purple pushing’ owing to the increased pressure this can create in your face and head. This can also restrict the oxygen flow to you and your baby and can increase the likelihood of perineal tissue damage so it’s better to breathe as you are pushing (unless there is necessity to get your baby out quickly).

Alternate nostril breathing

Pregnancy can be a time of fluctuating emotions and sleep disturbance. This is a gorgeous breathing practice to help you connect to your breath, to help calm your nervous system and can help with sleep too!

Make sure that your nose is clear. Sitting up with your back straight and your knees in line with or below your hips. Take a couple of deep breaths through both nostrils. If one of your nostrils is restricted then don’t continue.

Use your dominant hand. Rest your first and second fingers on your forehead. If you are right handed use your thumb to cover your right nostril and breathe in for a count of 4 just through your left nostril. Hold for a count of 1. Then release your thumb and cover your left nostril with your ring finger and breathe out through your right side for a count of 6 - 8, making sure that your breathing remains completely comfortable. At the end of your out breath, pause for a count of 1. Then breathe in through your right side again for a count of 4 with your left nostril remaining closed. Pause for a count of 1. Then change to cover your right as you breathe out through your left side for 6-8. Repeat for 1-3 minutes.

You can also use this breathing practice in bed if you are finding it hard to get to sleep or to get back to sleep on waking at night.

BodyMind Birthing courses include breathing for pregnancy and birth, perinatal yoga, hypnobirth AND full antenatal education! Available in person in Tunbridge Wells and also as a digital course you can do at your own pace for just £79!
