Congratulations to our latest dovetailed box making cohort: Gemma, Philippa, Ben and Darren, with moral support from Fred the border terrier. Three of the four are returning students, back for another short course at Furniture Craft School.

Cutting dovetails properly takes focus. The room swung between concentration and genuinely good conversation, and by the end of the week four beautiful boxes came out of it.

A drawer that fits by hand isn’t luck. It’s a sequence: measure, cut, test, adjust, test again. Gordon worked through each stage, checking in between steps, adjusting the fit until it slid on its own weight, no forcing, no gaps.

This is what a short course at Furniture Craft School looks like. You don’t arrive knowing how to do this. You’re coached through it, step by step, until you do.

Meet John. He joined us for our 3 week Shaker table course in July having previously made the games board (from our introduction to fine furniture-making.)

John said he likes returning because fine woodworking is for him ‘like a holiday’ — taking time, with no pressure, to learn and make something.

The Shaker Table course can feel a little like an overreach or overwhelm at first. ‘Will I be able to make this?’ Many wonder. By the end of week one, John had a whole frame made and glued up - ready for a tabletop and a drawer in weeks 2 and 3.

This project comes together beautifully, and it is so enjoyable both because of the peaceful, steady work and the company, which makes each team break so restoring mentally, physically and socially.

This summer, make an heirloom. 🪵

The Shaker Side Table course at Furniture Craft School is a rare opportunity to make a full piece of fine furniture.

We know it’s near impossible to take 3 weeks off, so we designed it as an experience that fits around real life.

🗓️ Flexible structure – Week 1 is fixed (27–31 July), then choose your remaining two weeks across August or beyond – this year or next. You don’t need three weeks off in a row.

🌿 Set on the Scotney Castle estate, Lamberhurst, Kent

✋ Hand tools, traditional joinery – tapered legs, half-blind dovetails, time on the lathe turning a little drawer pull

🍒 Cherry wood – one of the most beautiful British cabinet timbers

👥 Max 4 makers – genuinely small personal

💷 £590 per week. Pay flexibly: all at once, ad hoc per week as you progress on the course or in monthly instalments.

Perfect for the person who’s always said “I’d love to learn how to actually make something.” – or the maker ready to step up from a short intro.
