Looking for additional support to help pupils plan their next steps?

Your Future Kernow works alongside schools to support young people who may need extra help preparing for life after Year 11.

The service provides tailored support, including one-to-one mentoring, vocational profiling and guidance to help young people understand their strengths, explore opportunities and make informed decisions about their future.

For schools, this means additional support for pupils who may be at risk of becoming NEET, helping them build confidence, raise aspirations and identify positive pathways into education, employment or training.

Together, we can help more young people make successful transitions into their next stage of learning and work.

Are you home educating a young person in Cornwall, or do you know someone who is?

Our first Shaping Futures careers workshop takes place on Friday 4 September at The Hive, Bodmin.

Delivered by the Education Business Partnership (EBP), this hands-on K'NEX Air Powered Cars workshop will help young people develop skills that employers value, including problem-solving, teamwork, creativity and engineering. Participants will design, build and test their own vehicle while exploring careers linked to STEM, engineering, technology and manufacturing.

Whether your young person already has a career goal in mind or is just beginning to explore their options, this is a great opportunity to build confidence, learn new skills and discover future career pathways.

Friday 4 September
10:00am to 12:30pm
The Hive, Bodmin

Open to all home-educated young people in Cornwall.

We also have a range of other workshops on offer, including LEGO Robotics, Careers Pop-Up Sessions, Project Management Skills and Healthy Cornwall family cooking sessions.

Support doesn't always happen in a classroom.

Some young people feel more comfortable talking about their future in places that are familiar to them, whether that's in their local community, a youth setting or another environment where they feel at ease.

That's why Your Future Kernow works with young people where support is needed most, helping them explore their options, build confidence and plan their next steps in a way that works for them.

By taking a personalised approach, the team helps young people overcome barriers, recognise their strengths and make informed decisions about education, employment and training.

When young people feel comfortable, they're more likely to engage, open up and take positive steps towards their future.

Two young people. One year. A huge achievement.

A year ago, Dom Tlustochowicz and Aimee Hall joined Cornwall Council as Supported Interns. Since then, they have gained new skills, built their confidence and made a real difference in the teams they worked with.

Their journey did not stop there.

Dom and Aimee were selected as peer researchers for a supported employment study led by Plymouth University and the Health Determinants Research Collaboration. Out of just eight peer researchers involved across Plymouth, Medway and Lambeth, they proudly represented Cornwall.

To mark the end of the project, they travelled to London where they shared their experiences and spoke about what they had learned. For both young people, the trip was another important step towards greater confidence and independence.

Their story is a reminder that when we listen to young people, we create better opportunities and stronger services for the future.

As they take their next steps and apply for roles at Cornwall Council, we wish them every success.

Their achievements show what can happen when young people are given the chance to grow, contribute and be heard.
