I thought I would be twiddling my thumbs a little bit more this summer with older teenage children. However, it’s been joyously busy with a couple of family breaks away and being a very, very in-demand Mum taxi to various festivals, friend meet ups and a huge number of golf tournaments across the county. It’s actually been incredibly hard to fit in some summer sessions and I’ve had to say no a few times which is hard. However, it’s times like these when Harvey child No.2 is playing West Cornwall golf course, it would be rude not to turn it into a lovely day trip out to St Ives! A great outing with Mr H, complete with a wander around, fish and chips and a dip in the sea.

Looking forward to finalising tuition with families for September this week. 👏

🌅 Would maths tuition help your child, but after-school just feels impossible?🤔

For many families, afternoons are already full of clubs, homework, dinner, work and family life.

One family living overseas got in touch to ask whether before-school tuition might be possible instead.

Their child happened to be an early bird, so we met online before school. It turned out to be a brilliant fit. They started the day with calm, focused maths and afternoons were left free for everything else.

It won't be right for every family but sometimes the answer isn't finding more time. It's simply finding a different time.

One of my favourite tuition options is Rise & Shine Maths, online primary maths sessions before the school day begins.

This year it's worked brilliantly as a regular 7.30am session for an international family, helping fit tuition around time zones and busy family life.

I finally made it to see Hamilton👏. I tore my meniscus the day before I was due to see it in London in December. I rearranged my tickets for yesterday and the bonus was that Lesley Odin Jr. was in the cast. Pleased I bought my tickets when I did as they are up to £500 each now!🤷‍♀️Wow, what a show and seeing him is up there with seeing Alfie Boe in Les Miserables.🥰

🥚 Egg-cellent Maths! 🎉

It always fascinates me just how the weight of an egg is so varied. In a Sparkle and Shine Tuition tutorial, we weighed five different eggs and worked out the mean (average), range and mode. Hands-on activities make mathematical ideas much easier to understand.

And here's a little bonus... my favourite Yorkshire pudding recipe, shared with me by a friend years ago, starts by weighing the eggs.

🥚 Weigh the eggs.
🌾 Use the same weight of plain flour (g).
🥛 Add the same amount of milk (ml).

So, if the eggs weigh 57g, you'll need:
• 57g plain flour
• 57ml milk

(Apologies for the egg puns... I couldn't egg-nore them😉)

With the summer holidays in full swing, children often have a little more time to build, create and make.

Whether it's LEGO, magnetic shapes, craft or construction toys, they're developing mathematical thinking without even realising it.

It's a lovely reminder that some of the best maths happens when children are busy doing, making and exploring.
