It's common for children to struggle with questions that ask "how many more...." when interpreting data. To help a ✨Sparkle and Shine Tuition ✨student recently, I used cubes to help them understand.

Who can build the biggest tower in 30 seconds? This clearly showed what "more than" meant and we were able to apply this knowledge to their graph questions.👍

Another ✨Sparkle and Shine Tuition ✨student explored the 9x table last week, looking at patterns and how we can use our hands and fingers to help. They even created a helpful fold down cut out of their own hands to help, with funky multicoloured nail varnish of course!💅😊

How much change from a £10 note❓

A real 💡lightbulb💡moment for one ✨Sparkle and Shine Tuition ✨last week, when first totalling the cost of his 🐟fish and chips🍟(£5.55) and then working out the change from a £10 note.

They were convinced it was £5.45, but when we checked the answer using different methods (a blank numberline and column subtraction), they suddenly realised what they had done. Lots of chat about the common traps we can fall into when working out change and top-tips discussed.👏

🌋The Floor Is Lava🌋

My children used to love the TV programme "The Floor Is Lava" where you had to avoid touching the floor whilst doing challenges.

This week, in a ✨Sparkle and Shine Tuition ✨home-education session, we were exploring negative numbers, counting backwards through zero, adding and subtracting negative numbers and working out differencees.

Out came the masking tape which we turned into a giant numberline from -15 to +15. We then took turns to spin the spinner and move our player accordingly. Nobody wanted to plunge off the edge of the desk into the lava!

The student was then able to apply their new skills to some more formal maths calcualations and reasoning problems involving negative numbers. 👏

What are the chances❓

Working with an older ✨Sparkle and Shine Tuition ✨ home educated child on probability, a new area of learning. Out came the masking tape to make our scale. New language was learnt ("uncertain" was unfamiliar), fractions, decimals, percentages and formulas were covered and they had fun using their imagination to create their own competitive games that involved probability.

Order, Order!🔨🔢

With some of my older students, we’ve been revisiting place value and practising how to order numbers. So, out came Mr H’s prized books!

Putting the books into alphabetical order was a helpful way to reinforce the same method we use when ordering numbers:
🔢 With numbers, we compare the digits from left to right until we find the first difference.
🔤 With words, we compare the letters from left to right until we find the first difference.

It was a simple, practical way to connect maths with a familiar real-life skill. Mr H had the joy of putting his prized books back on his shelf in the correct order later!🤣😌

First week back tutoring and have realised that I’m looking rather leopard ‘printy’ today for students. 🤣
