Monday saw the Year 7 final trip of the year to Washwalk Farm. Fortunately the heavy rain had passed in the night and we had a lovely warm, dry day.
The plan was to explore the world of moths but given the overnight rain, we werenāt expecting much. However, due to the extraordinary efforts of Sue (getting up at 4.30am to cover the traps), we actually had a beautiful array of moths to look at.
After learning a little about their natural history and ecological importance, we then got a really close look at the different species, some tiny, some huge but all beautifully patterned. Some of us had a go at drawing them, whilst others just enjoyed gently releasing them back into the wild.
After the moths (and lunch), we then had a good look around the vegetable garden and polytunnel. There was a lot growing and it was great to join up the fruits and vegetables on our plates with what they look like when they are in the ground. We discussed companion planting, medicinal plants and seasonal harvesting, as well as smelling and even tasting a few treats.
We finished the day back in the meadow, with a challenge. Each group had to choose a small area and develop it as a āNational Parkā considering its sustainability - economically, socially and environmentally. There were lovely ideas proposed, with eco-campsites, rewilding areas and even an impressively made river swing.
