Uplyme Pre-School was established about 30 years ago in the village hall of Uplyme, close to the seaside resort of Lyme Regis. The group moved to a new village hall in 1994. What a busy few weeks we’ve had at preschool. We had our sports day, the children all did so well in all 4 races followed by our duck race 🏃🦆. We then had pirate day which is full of pirate fun! The children built their own pirate ship and completed a treasure hunt to find the buried treasure. Next is our teddy bears picnic themed day, the children could bring in their favourite Teddy 🐻, we read them stories, made cupcakes and had a teddy bears picnic 🧺. Our end of term trip was to Seaton Wetlands where Penny from Wild East Devon led the session and we went on a Gruffalo hunt! It was a very fun morning, pond dipping and exploring.

We had some fantastic prizes donated for our duck race prizes and raised a whopping £414.10, you were all superb, thank you.

It’s been a hot week at preschool but the hall stayed nice and cool so children could play inside or in our shaded outside space. We had lots of water and ice play and we popped to the garden before it got too hot to water our vegetables 🥕🫛. We enjoyed our carrots and peas at snack time!

This week we went to check on our vegetable patch in the garden, everything had grown and changed over the half term and some of our peas were ready to be picked. The children enjoyed the peas 🫛 at snack time and they are looking forward to checking again soon to see if our strawberries and tomatoes are ready to eat. 🍅 🍓 🥕

In light of the news that the education secretary has asked the Competitions and Markets Authority to look into the early years sector, we're sharing a free interactive explainer to help you understand the problem with early years underfunding – and the impossible choices that we are being left to make.

Imagine you run a sandwich shop.

Let's say it costs you £1 to make a sandwich and you charge customers £1.10 per sandwich to make a profit to reinvest into your business.

Now imagine that one day, the government announces that it's going to pay for two free sandwiches a week for all working adults (in a bid to win votes).

The problem is they are only willing to pay sandwich shops like you 50p per sandwich to meet this promise. That's 50p less than it costs you to make them and 60p less than you normally charge for them.

Over the course of a year, this could result in your business losing thousands of pounds.

What would you do?

What a lovely way to round up our topic ‘people who help us’ with a visit from the Lyme Regis fire engine and some of their amazing crew. The children loved being shown the different equipment used to save lives, they all had a turn to use the hose, sit in the driving seat and turn on the siren and blue lights 🚒 🚨. A huge thank you to Lyme Regis Fire engine and crew.
