Remember these…💕👇

No one can really see what a dyslexic child goes through everyday at school because the majority of what they go through is invisible. It’s hidden.

The mental toll.
The feelings of overwhelm.
The extreme tiredness.
The feelings of frustration and self-doubt.
The having to work much harder all the time.
The anxiety and low confidence.

We can see the obvious dyslexic traits in our dyslexic children pretty clearly: the spelling errors, the slowness to get a piece of written work down on paper and the obvious reading difficulties BUT the other bits they battle with day to day - the mental battle they face everyday - is hidden.

So many things they go through are simply not seen because they’re expert maskers! I know this because, take our son for example, so many times his teachers have assumed he’s absolutely fine.

But underneath it all he’s not been at times. He’s an anxious little boy that gets very very tired.

The school day makes him feel exhausted. He gets very tired from trying to keep up and cope in class. He doesn’t want to be found out as struggling. He knows he gets things muddled and mixed up but he doesn’t want his peers to know. He’s constantly having to squash this fear in class.

Yes you can see that he’s dyslexic but most of the time the hardest bit about being dyslexic is the unseen things. Do you know what I mean?

Do you get this too? Is your dyslexic child an expert masker? Do you get a different version of your child at home than at school?

This is worrying, and the reason I have additional training in Dyslexia coaching. To hopefully put a stop to this.

This is worrying, and the reason I have additional training in Dyslexia coaching. To hopefully put a stop to this.

When we asked whether dyslexia had affected people's mental health, the majority said it had – with many reporting a significant impact.

As one member of our community put it:

"Dyslexia itself isn’t bad for my mental health. What causes harm is how people treat me because I’m dyslexic."

This is an important reminder that the biggest challenges often come not from dyslexia itself, but from misunderstanding, stigma and a lack of appropriate support.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experience.

What is dyslexia?

‘Dyslexia is defined as a set of processing difficulties that affect the acquisition of reading and spelling.’ (Delphi Study, 2025)

Hello! I'm Victoria, and I have just started Bridge Dyslexia in Tiverton, Mid Devon. Over the last year, since leaving my last post, I have been working on developing my own practice and I am excited to be here today!

I have always been passionate about ensuring that all children with dyslexia and neurodivergence receive the support and encouragement they need to thrive. Dyslexia is a neurological learning difference that can cause significant stress and fear of failure in children and young people without the right support.

Please pass on my details to anyone you know of who may be interested.

Thank you!
