At the heart of his theory is the idea that children learn best through relationships, social interaction, and play. He introduced the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) – the space between what a child can do on their own and what they can achieve with the support of a safe, attuned adult.

In play, children naturally step into this zone.

They explore roles, express feelings, test boundaries, and make sense of their world.

The first 2 years of life are critical for brain development so a wide variety of real world interactions are absolutely crucial.

Can screen exposure before age 2 permanently harm a baby’s brain? Recent research has raised concerns about excessive early screen time, but the science requires careful interpretation.

The first 2 years of life are critical for brain development. During this period, neural connections form rapidly through direct interaction with caregivers, language exposure, and physical exploration. Some studies have found associations between high screen time in infancy and differences in language development, attention, and white matter organization in the brain. These findings are based on observational research using imaging tools such as MRI scans.

However, most studies show correlation, not proven permanent damage. Factors such as parental interaction, socioeconomic status, and overall environment also strongly influence outcomes. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding routine screen exposure for children under 18 to 24 months, except for video chatting, primarily because real world interaction supports healthier cognitive growth.

The key issue is not screens alone, but what they replace. When screens reduce face to face interaction, conversation, and play, developmental risks increase. Balanced guidance focuses on limiting passive screen time and prioritizing responsive human engagement.

Should a diet to lose weight consist of lettuce or doughnuts? 🥬🍩

We all know the answer so why do schools miss that mark when offering a ‘sensory diet’ as part of meeting SEN needs?

A diet only of doughnuts is not a good diet however much they may calm you and please you in that moment! There is always the sugar-crash 📉and extra pounds on the scales ⚖️ as a consequence!

So it follows that a sensory diet should be offering the lettuce equivalent, meeting the UNMET sensory needs of the body and not flooding it with more of what it craves.

Schools invest £000’s on sensory rooms filled with lights and bubble tubes, calming music and tuff-trays filled with sand, shaving foam or rice.

These offerings look good, so caring and supposedly meeting the needs of all their SEN children. The schools pat themselves on the back and sit back whilst these children are corralled in these sensory rooms to keep them happy and quiet!

BUT…BUT…BUT these sensory diets meet at most only 3 of the 9 areas of sensory processing need - Visual,Tactile and Auditory 👀✋🏻👂🏻Why? - because they are the easiest!

They don’t meet any other more behaviourally important proprioceptive, vestibular, olfactory, gustatory, interoceptive or neuroceptive needs!

So what happens? The children are fed an unsuitable diet to keep them ‘happy’ and satisfy their cravings, but that means their bodies still have many unmet needs.

Until that is understood the ‘sensory diet’ plans and money spent on sensory rooms is utterly wasted. Do not be fooled!

This is what is happening to all our children today and it’s a global phenomenon.
The problem is real and urgent because phones and screens are changing the way children’s brains develop and this has a serious knock-on effect for their learning and for life!

We often tell ourselves that screen time is fine because we grew up with TV, but the technology has changed faster than our children’s bodies can adapt.

Our old cartoons were slow and predictable, but modern apps are built with rapid visual cuts and designs specifically made to trap a child’s attention.

A phone is a portable, high intensity world that keeps a child hunched over and physically isolated, whereas our old TV was a stationary object that still allowed us to move and interact in a shared room.

While we spent our afternoons climbing trees and testing our balance, children today are missing the physical lessons they need to stay strong and steady.

We simply cannot compare the occasional Saturday morning cartoon to a device that provides endless excitement at the swipe of a finger.

It is not about blame, it is about realising that our children are becoming physically fragile because their world has become too still.

They don’t need more digital stimulation, they need movement challenges out in the real 3D world, to teach them how to use both of their hands at the same time, and stay upright on their own two feet.

When a toy does everything for a child, the brain has very little to do. Flashing lights, constant sounds, and automatic rewards keep attention busy without requiring effort. The brain becomes a spectator instead of an active participant.

Neuroscience shows that learning depends on struggle. When children have to imagine, problem solve, or invent rules, the brain builds focus and persistence. Toys that entertain on their own remove that challenge. The child receives stimulation, but the brain does not practice thinking.

Over time, this changes how attention works. The brain learns to wait for input instead of creating it. Activities that require effort start to feel boring or frustrating. This is not a motivation problem. It is a training problem created by too much passive stimulation.

So called boring toys are powerful because they leave space. Blocks, dolls, simple cars, and open ended materials invite invention. The child must decide what happens next. That effort strengthens attention, creativity, and emotional regulation. The goal is not fewer toys. It is fewer toys that perform. When the brain is invited to work, attention grows instead of shrinking.

Reading to a baby is not entertainment. It is brain wiring. When babies are not read to, their brains receive far fewer meaningful words during the most sensitive language building window. By age 3, this gap can show up as delayed speech and reduced vocabulary.

The brain develops based on what it hears most often. Without books and spoken stories, the brain does not default to language. It locks onto the loudest signals in the environment. Background TV, raised voices, and constant noise replace rhythm, structure, and imagination.

Neuroscience shows that language grows through repetition, tone, and interaction. Books provide predictable patterns that help the brain organize sounds into meaning. When a caregiver reads, pauses, and responds, the brain learns how conversation works. Screens cannot do this. Noise cannot teach it.

Reading daily does not require long sessions or perfect attention. Even a few minutes builds neural pathways for focus, comprehension, and imagination. Books teach the brain how to listen before it can speak. When reading becomes routine, language has a chance to grow. Without it, the brain fills the silence with whatever is loudest, not what helps development most.
