A huge congratulations to William on achieving his ABRSM Initial Performance Grade 🎹🏅
This is a wonderful achievement, made even more special as William has passed just before his 9th birthday! He has worked hard, shown great determination, and it has been lovely to see his confidence and musicianship grow throughout his lessons.
I am incredibly proud of everything he has achieved and look forward to seeing where his musical journey takes him next.
Well done, William, and happy birthday🌟🎂

One thing I often hear is, ‘We’ll see how lessons go first, then buy a piano.’
I’d actually suggest doing it the other way round.
I can still remember going with my mum and dad to buy our family piano. I was so little that I was shorter than the keyboard! The piano quickly became part of our home and part of our childhood.
My dad couldn’t really play in the traditional sense and certainly didn’t read music, but he loved sitting at the piano making things up and singing. My sister and I would copy what he did, improvising, dancing around and inventing our own music.
Many musicians talk about discovering music through listening to records, CDs and concerts. Looking back, I think I found music in a slightly different way. I discovered it through playing. The piano was there, so I played it. The books were there, so I explored them.
It was a very different time. This was long before the internet, streaming services, smartphones and tablets. Music wasn’t available instantly, and recordings could be expensive. After my dad died when I was six, I rarely heard music at home outside of school. My mum wasn’t someone who bought music or had music playing in the background.
Yet somehow I found my way into music anyway, largely through the piano itself.
Years ago, before every form of entertainment lived in our pockets, the piano was often the entertainment. Families gathered around it to sing, play, dance and make music together.
Sadly, there’s also much less music in schools now than there used to be. For many children, lessons may be their only regular musical experience. Having a piano at home gives them the opportunity to explore, create and develop a relationship with music beyond the lesson itself.
Not every child who has a piano will become a musician, but every piano creates possibilities.
I dread to think how differently my life might have turned out if my parents hadn’t bought that piano.
🎹 I’d love to hear your stories too. Do you remember your first piano, keyboard or musical instrument? How did music first enter your life?

Just a quick reminder that we’re still waiting on the last few Half Term Practice Competition sheets. If I haven’t received yours yet, please send me a photo so everyone can be included! 📸🎹
I’ve had lots of positive feedback from parents, with many asking for weekly and termly practice sheets. With that in mind, practice log books are available to purchase!
If students bring a practice log book (or similar diary) to lessons, I’ll happily fill it in each week to help encourage and support practice at home. 📖✨

🎹 Half Term Practice Challenge Update! 🎹
I still don’t have everyone’s practice sheets back yet, so I’m not quite ready to announce the overall winners. However, a huge well done to those of you who completed 7 out of 7 days of practice and have already secured a guaranteed prize! 👏🏆
I have absolutely loved reading everyone’s reflections and, in particular, the wonderful Parent to Child Comments. They have been such a lovely reminder that piano progress is about so much more than minutes practised – it’s about perseverance, resilience, confidence, enjoyment and developing good habits.
Some of the comments that stood out to me were:
💜 “You have done well this year. I’m proud of you. Keep trying your best.”
💜 “The progress you have made in such a short time.”
💜 “Trying new pieces before lessons and always giving your best effort.”
💜 “Showing determination and resilience when learning challenging pieces.”
💜 “The determination you have shown to improve your piano skills.”
💜 “Your commitment to practising regularly and making steady progress.”
💜 “Sticking to your daily practice routine, even on days when you are busy or tired.”
💜 “Practising every day and staying motivated.”
💜 “The growing confidence and enjoyment you are finding in music.”
💜 “Making piano practice part of your everyday routine.”
💜 “Your hard work, effort and positive attitude.”
Many parents commented on their child’s focus, commitment, resilience, determination and enjoyment of music. It has been a real pleasure to read so many encouraging messages and to see the support our students receive at home.
Thank you to everyone who has taken part so far. If you haven’t returned your sheet yet, please remember to bring it to your next lesson so I can include you in the prize draw 🏆
🎹✨ Well done everyone, and keep up the fantastic work! ✨🎹
