“MIX IT UP” today we had great fun exploring colours, we squished it, we smudged it, we dripped it, we poked it, we talked about it, then we watched the magic happen as orange, green and purple appeared 🎨

Harlyn shows me a Christmas picture he’s just created...

“Amazing Harlyn, what is it?”

How does this make Harlyn feel? Does Harlyn know the words to tell me? What if he doesn’t know what it is? Was Harlyn just practicing? Have I just put pressure on him? .. Now he doesn’t want to talk.

1. When we put pressure on a child to tell us what they’ve drawn, we put focus on the ‘end result’ and take away from all the wonderful experimental learning involved in ‘mark making’.

2. Children need to be given language before they can be expected to use it.

“Oh Harlyn look at the beautiful red circles... you’ve used the glue stick and put sparkly shapes in them...”

When I comment on Harlyn’s picture, I...
- give language to his marks that build his vocabulary.
- give him the opportunity and confidence to engage in conversation (IF) he wants to,
- if he doesn’t respond 🤷🏻‍♀️... Harlyn still feels proud and continues to keep learning!🙌🏼💪🏼
