Will your child achieve the expected standard in phonics?

The National Phonics Screening Check is fast approaching. It is a statutory assessment for Year 1 pupils (aged 5–6) in England, taking place in June to test decoding skills via 40 words. It ensures children are learning to read properly, with those failing (threshold usually around 32/40) re-taking it in Year 2.

What could failing this assessment mean for my child?

Failing the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check generally means a child has not met the expected standard in decoding real and "alien" (nonsense) words, leading to increased focus on reading support in Year 2. Key impacts include mandatory re-sits in Year 2 and lower predicted literacy attainment.

Why is reading so important?

Reading boosts brain development, language skills, and literacy. Regular reading fosters empathy, creativity, and improves attention spans, while also serving as a relaxing, bonding, and confidence-building activity. It sets the foundation for academic success, better mental wellbeing, and improved social skills.

I have a genuine passion and interest in teaching phonics. Contact me for more information regarding my phonics offer. Phonics is the building blocks to a confident and successful reader!

It’s never too late to help your child and it’s certainly NOT about passing a test.

Please feel free to contact me with any queries you have.

Would you like your preschooler to learn in a fun and engaging way…..but you’re not sure where to start?

As a teacher, I understand the importance of preparing children for school. Before anything else, this involves encouraging independence, establishing routines, providing emotional reassurance and promoting good communication skills . It often includes things like toilet training, dressing, eating independently and building your child’s resilience when things go wrong.

Alongside this can be preparing your child for the academic side of school. This is optional.

Some of the ways I recommend doing this include…

- Developing a life-long love of reading
- Songs & rhymes
- Short concentrating & listening activities
- Activities to strengthen fine motor skills
- Recognising & writing their name
- Phonics
- Numeracy skills

(This is not an exhaustive list, and rather some examples)

Please remember it’s not a ‘one way fits all’ approach, I offer a bespoke service with your child’s individual needs and learning style at the core of what I do.

After over a decade of working in education, I’m so excited to be on this journey with my very own little preschooler.

Please contact me if you would like to book a session for your child. As well as this, I also offer 1:1 sessions with parents (face to face/phone call/Teams) packed with everything you need to know!

There's been a major step forward for the ‘Play is Learning’ campaign, as MPs debate a petition signed by over 106,000 parents calling for play-based learning to continue into Year 1 and 2.

Right now in England, the law says play-based learning ends at Reception – unlike in Scotland and Wales, where it's protected through the early years of school.

But campaigners say this needs to change. They argue that the abrupt shift from play to paperwork isn't developmentally appropriate – and many children feel the impact fast.

'Children don’t suddenly stop learning through play just because they’ve turned five,' says petition founder and former deputy head Ruth Lue-Quee (mymummyteacher).

Could England follow the evidence – and protect play in early primary classrooms, or do you think children should be learning behind desks after reception?

I now only have limited spaces available. Keep reading if you are thinking about hiring a tutor for your child…

An experienced tutor will…

- Create customised targets based on your child’s learning style, gaps in their learning, strengths & weaknesses and general needs
- Boost your child’s confidence through careful planning, praise, communication and 1:1 coaching
- Improve academic performance by addressing their individual needs and providing targeted support
- Prepare your child to take an exam with confidence
- Fill any gaps in their knowledge through re-teaching concepts, helping your child catch up and avoid falling further behind
- Ensure your child is reaching their full potential… this could be working at or above age related expectations
- Work holistically… considering all parts of your child’s learning journey and how they connect and influence each other, rather than focusing on isolating parts

Whatever your concern, please feel free to contact me for a chat. I have a genuine passion for teaching and learning and I want to help your child now! Please don’t leave tuition until next academic year, early intervention is key.
