We’re exploring vocabulary through word-building games. Understanding word meanings helps children develop reading comprehension and verbal reasoning skills.

Year 5 11+ Group

Is your child preparing for the 11+ in September 2027?

My new Year 5 11+ group begins on Tuesday 6th October, from 6.00pm to 7.00pm, in Wellington.

The weekly sessions will provide structured preparation across:

English and vocabulary
Maths and problem solving
Verbal reasoning
Non verbal reasoning
Exam techniques and timed practice

Skills will be introduced gradually, with teaching adapted to the children’s strengths and any areas needing further support. Regular practice and homework will help to secure learning between sessions.

The small group setting allows children to learn alongside others, share ideas and build confidence, while still receiving individual guidance.

Places are limited to keep the group small and ensure that each child receives individual support.

Practical maths in action!

When children are learning a new concept, physically seeing and doing the maths can make all the difference.

By making a giant number line and moving along it themselves, children can see which multiple of 10 is closest. With practice, this practical understanding develops into quicker, and eventually instant, rounding skills.

Using place-value equipment is just as valuable when learning written addition. Physically exchanging ten ones for one ten, or ten tens for one hundred, helps children understand what is really happening when we exchange between columns.

Practical activities build secure understanding before children move on to abstract calculations. Maths becomes something they can see, touch and experience, rather than simply a set of rules to remember.

📚 YEAR 5 11+ GROUP TUITION – WELLINGTON, TELFORD

Is your child in Year 5 and preparing for the 11+ in September 2027?

I have limited places available in my small, friendly Year 5 11+ group, starting this October.

Tuesdays, 6–7pm
Wellington, Telford
Small group – maximum 6 children
Qualified primary teacher with over 30 years' experience

Weekly sessions will prepare children across all four areas of the GL 11+:

Maths
English & vocabulary
Verbal Reasoning
Non-Verbal Reasoning

Alongside developing the knowledge and skills needed for the test, I'll teach children practical strategies for tackling unfamiliar questions, build confidence and develop good exam technique.

Regular practice between sessions will help reinforce learning, with teaching continually adapted to the strengths and gaps I identify along the way.

My aim is to provide thorough 11+ preparation in a supportive, encouraging small-group environment where children can learn alongside others while still receiving plenty of individual attention.

Today’s the day!

Good luck to everyone sitting their 11+ today.

You’ve practised, learnt new skills, tackled tricky questions and worked incredibly hard to get to this point.

Now it’s time to trust yourself and show what you can do.

Take your time, read each question carefully and use all those little strategies you’ve practised.

Most importantly…

Be calm. Be confident. Believe in yourself.
Go and SHINE!

⏰ 11+ Countdown Tip: Stuck on a question?

In a timed 11+ test, it’s easy to spend too long battling with one tricky question. If you’re stuck, don’t let it eat into the time you could be using to collect marks elsewhere.

Skip it and move on.
Circle it so you know to come back.
Return to it when you’ve worked through the other questions.

And one really important reminder: make sure you answer every question before the end.

There is no penalty for an incorrect answer, so never leave a question blank. Use what you know to rule out any answers that can’t be right, then have your best go. With five choices, even a guess gives you a 1 in 5 chance of getting the mark!

Sometimes good test technique isn’t about knowing every answer straight away. It’s about using your time wisely and giving yourself the best chance to pick up every possible mark.

Good luck to everyone with their final 11+ preparation. Trust your strategies, stay calm and believe in yourself!

⏰ 11+ COUNTDOWN – MATHS

Today’s tip: LEAP ON THE LINE TO SOLVE TIME!

Time questions can be tricky, especially when children try to work out the whole time difference in one go.

A simple number line can make it much easier.

Leap to easy times, then add your leaps.

For example, from 8:47am to 11:15am:

8:47 → 9:00 = 13 minutes
9:00 → 11:00 = 2 hours
11:00 → 11:15 = 15 minutes

So the total time is 2 hours 28 minutes. ✓

Breaking the calculation into manageable jumps can make those awkward time questions much easier to tackle under test conditions.

Today’s tip: PROVE IT!

Comprehension answers can sometimes feel right; but can you prove them?

A little reminder I use with my pupils is:

“Only choose it if you can prove it!”

For inference questions, go back to the text and find the words or phrases that provide evidence for your answer.

In this example, Ben doesn’t actually say that he’s disappointed, but the clues “sighed” and “slowly put his football boots back in his bag” help us work it out.

Answer + Text Evidence = PROVE IT!

A simple habit that can help children avoid being caught out by those tempting multiple-choice answers!

Today’s tip: SNAPSS

Sometimes with NVR, the hardest part is knowing where to start when the answer doesn't immediately jump out!

A little checklist I use with my pupils is SNAPSS:

S – Shape
N – Number
A – Angle
P – Position
S – Size
S – Shading

If you're stuck, work through the list and ask yourself:

What has changed? What has stayed the same?

It gives children a systematic way to tackle the question rather than simply staring at the shapes and hoping the pattern appears!

Another useful little strategy to have ready for test day.

⏰ 11+ COUNTDOWN – MATHS

Today’s tip: Dividing Fractions

Dividing fractions can look complicated, but there's a little phrase I use with my pupils to help them remember exactly what to do:

Keep, Change, Flip!

KEEP the first fraction
CHANGE the ÷ to ×
FLIP the second fraction

Then multiply across as usual.

So:

3/4 ÷ 2/5 → 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8 ✓

A simple memory trick that can turn a tricky-looking question into a much more manageable one!
