We were delighted to welcome our own Kirsti Paisley and husband Owen today, representing Action West Loch. This is a small community group who are aiming to restore the ecosystems of West Loch, Tarbert and in particular, restoring Serpulid reefs. Serpulid worms are about 10cm long and feed using a bright red fan of tentacles, living in hard calcareous tubes. Whilst these reefs are only found in a handful of Scottish sea lochs, they are beginning to disappear.
Action West Loch worked with our children today to create artificial ceramic structures which will be p@laced on the seabed in West Loch and hopefully encourage the Serpulid worms begin creating new reefs. This is a pioneering project and we feel incredibly lucky to have been part of it and we can't wait to see what impact these structures will have for the Serpulid worm population in West Loch.

Apologies for the late post tonight, it has been a super busy day! The children started their day on mountain bikes and cycled across different types of terrain, challenging their balance and coordination. The final stop was at the Sandwich Station where a very well earned ice-cream was a proper treat. Back to base for lunch and then straight into wet gear for raft building! We split into two teams and watched how they worked together to build their rafts on the shore. The rafts were then carefully launched and everyone climbed aboard...one raft perhaps faired a bit better than the other, however our instructor Ralph swiftly fashioned a second raft which ticked the box. The children then just enjoyed horsing about in the water. Home for a hot shower, change of clothes and then dinner. Tonight we made our way to the salt marshes and enjoyed a campfire with toasted marshmallows.
Everyone was so relaxed tonight, full of giggles and mischief. It has been lovely watching the children from across the four schools bonding so well with each other. We, the staff team, have all said we need to do more of this.
For now though, it is goodnight and tomorrow we will have one more activity before we pack up and bring home all our smelly laundry and mismatched socks!

All settled into bed and sleeping soundly. Think the fresh air has knocked them all out! We had another hearty dinner and then enjoyed some team games indoors as the weather couldn't quite make its mind up, this evening.
The tuck shop was open tonight and lots of purchases were made. I'm pleased to say that everyone's snacks seem to be lasting pretty well too! Will check in again tomorrow. Night all! 😴💤

Well, Day 2 started off with a breakfast of porridge, omelette, sausages and beans and enough toast to sink a battleship! We then got dressed for our morning activity of gorge walking. After wrestling into wetsuits, waterproof tops and bottoms, buoyancy aids, helmets and boots, we were ready to get into the buses to head to Glen Sannox. As the rain had been reasonably steady through the night, the river was just perfect for 8 weans and 2 staff to start working their way up...one staff member (naturally) was the photographer and stayed dry on the bank...until the children decided she needed a soggy cuddle!! The resilience shown by all today was remarkable. Gorge walking takes courage, strength and teamwork and that is exactly what we saw. This afternoon, the children have played Archery 🏹 and done some problem solving team games. Think we are nearly ready for more food soon! I'll update again later. 🎒👌

After a good walk following dinner with some clues to solve on the way along, some free time in the games room, we were all ready for some sleep! Sweet dreams everyone, you have been brilliant. ❤️

So our intrepid P6/7 group from Glenbarr Primary School, Gigha Primary School, Clachan Primary and our own Rhunahaorine Primary School & Pre-Five Unit arrived on the beautiful Isle of Arran for day 1 of our 4 day residential. Already we have spent sometime in Canadian Canoes paddling around Lochranza Castle. We enjoyed some VERY competitive games involving ducks and footballs! Thankfully we are back on dry land and just about ready for dinner before our evening 'mystery' activity.
Updates will be in this format only and we will make a montage of all the photos we take to share with you when we return. Connecting photos to Facebook is a little tricky off-site!
Everyone, so far, is doing fine and I will update again later when all is quiet! 😴💤
