π₯ What happens in a first drum lesson?
The answer depends on whether you've played before.
π₯ If you're a complete beginner...
We'll start with the basics, get you comfortable behind the drum kit and, before you know it, you'll be playing your first drum beat. If you pick it up quickly, we might even add a simple fill too. My aim is for you to leave your very first lesson thinking, *"I can do this!"*
π₯ If you've had lessons before...
My approach is slightly different.
Before making changes, I like to watch you play. I'm looking at things like your posture, stick grip, timing, coordination, technique and how you naturally approach the drum kit. Understanding where you are now helps me build lessons that develop your strengths and address any habits that might be holding you back.
Every drummer arrives with a different background and different goals. That's why I believe it's important to understand the individual before deciding on the journey ahead.
If you've wondered what happens in a first drum lesson, hopefully that gives you a little insight! :) π₯

π₯ No two drummers are the same, so why should every lesson be?
One of the first things I do with every new student is simply... watch.
Not just *what* they're playing, but *how* they're playing.
I noticed something interesting with two new students. After watching them play for just a few minutes, it became clear that they naturally led with their left hand. When I asked, both told me they were left-handed, even though they'd always been learning on a standard right-handed drum kit.
Now, being left-handed doesn't automatically mean you should play a left-handed setup. Many fantastic left-handed drummers play on right-handed kits. But it's something that's worth exploring rather than assuming there's only one "correct" way.
Sometimes, a small adjustment or simply understanding how a student naturally approaches the kit can make a huge difference to their comfort, confidence and progress.
That's why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all teaching.
Every student arrives with different strengths, challenges, experiences and ways of learning. My job is to recognise those and build lessons around the individual, not expect the individual to fit a lesson.
Because no two drummers are the same... so why should every lesson be? π₯
