🐾 BE THE MOST INTERESTING THING IN YOUR DOG'S WORLD!

This is Freya, my Belgian Malinois, and this photo shows something I believe is incredibly important when it comes to dog training.

Your dog should want to pay attention to YOU.

Think about it. When you're out walking, there's a whole world of distractions competing for your dog's attention.

Other dogs, people, smells, wildlife… the list goes on.

But here's the question.

When something exciting happens, does your dog look to you for guidance, or does it completely forget you exist?

One of the biggest things I work on with Freya is engagement.

I want her to see me as someone worth paying attention to. Someone who makes training enjoyable, gives her clear direction and rewards her for making good choices.

And that relationship doesn't happen overnight.

It's built through play, consistency, communication, rewarding good decisions and making yourself an important part of your dog's world.

You don't need to compete with every distraction. You need to build a relationship where your dog chooses to check in with you.

That doesn't mean your dog should stare at you every second of a walk. Dogs need opportunities to sniff, explore and enjoy being dogs too.

But when you need their attention, you want them to willingly give it.

Because a dog that's engaged with its owner is a dog that's easier to communicate with, easier to guide and ultimately more enjoyable to spend time with.

Don't just teach your dog to listen. Give them a reason to WANT to listen.

Building trust, confidence and understanding.

Every dog is different. Different personalities, different temperaments and different experiences.

And that's exactly why dog training should never be a one-size-fits-all approach.

Here at Aesir Training K9, we work on helping dogs develop the confidence to be around other dogs, listen to their owners and understand what's expected of them.

But here's something important…

Your dog doesn't need to be best friends with every dog it meets.

Being able to sit calmly alongside another dog, without reacting, becoming overwhelmed or constantly wanting to interact, is a valuable skill in itself.

It's about creating positive experiences, building confidence and teaching dogs that they can simply exist around one another.

And for owners struggling with reactive dogs, moments like these can be a huge achievement.

Good training isn't about controlling every move your dog makes. It's about building a relationship based on trust, communication and consistency.

Rocky, a 5-year-old German Shepherd from Birmingham, came to Aesir Training K9 after a bite incident and high reactivity around people and other dogs. Through a focused 4-day 1-to-1 programme, we worked on structure, handling, socialisation and real-world environmental training.
The result? A calmer dog, clearer communication, and a much better foundation for everyday life.

🐾 “People often ask me why I got into dog training…”

For me, it's never just been about teaching a dog to sit, stay or walk nicely on a lead.

It's about the relationship between a dog and its owner.

I'm Dan, the face behind Aesir Training K9, and one of the things I'm most passionate about is helping people understand their dogs.

I've seen how frustrating life can become when communication breaks down. When walks become stressful, when dogs don't listen, or when owners feel like they've tried everything and nothing works.

But I've also seen what happens when things finally click.

When an owner starts to understand their dog. When the dog begins to understand what's expected of them. When that frustration turns into confidence.

That's why I do what I do.

It's not about having a perfectly behaved dog that never puts a foot wrong.

It's about building trust, creating consistency and giving both the dog and the owner the tools to enjoy life together.

Because for me, the most rewarding part of dog training isn't seeing a dog follow a command.

It's seeing the difference it makes to the people who love them.

🐾 SOCIALISING YOUR DOG — IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT LETTING THEM PLAY!

Socialising your dog with other dogs is important, but there's a big difference between simply putting dogs together and teaching them how to behave appropriately around each other.

And if you've got a reactive dog, you'll know just how stressful meeting other dogs can be.

Barking, lunging, pulling on the lead or becoming overwhelmed can turn what should be an enjoyable walk into something you dread.

But here's the thing — socialisation doesn't mean your dog has to meet every dog it sees.

Sometimes, the most valuable lesson your dog can learn is how to remain calm around other dogs without needing to interact with them.

At Aesir Training K9, we believe controlled, supervised interactions and the right training are essential.

It's about:

🐕 Understanding your dog's behaviour and body language.

🐕 Introducing dogs at the right pace, in the right environment.

🐕 Building confidence rather than forcing interactions.

🐕 Teaching your dog to remain calm and focused around distractions.

🐕 Knowing when to allow interaction and when to create space.

If your dog is reactive, simply exposing them to more dogs isn't necessarily going to solve the problem. In fact, without the right guidance, it can sometimes make things worse.

With professional training, patience and a structured approach, you can work towards calmer, more enjoyable experiences for both you and your dog.

Remember, a well-socialised dog isn't necessarily one that loves every other dog. It's one that can feel comfortable and behave appropriately around them.

🐾 LET'S TALK ABOUT TREATS.

Does your dog respect you… or does it just respect the treat in your hand?

It's an interesting question.

If your dog only listens when you've got a treat, what happens when you haven't?

What happens when there's a distraction? Another dog? A person? Something far more exciting than that biscuit in your pocket?

Treats can be a fantastic training tool. They help reward good behaviour and teach dogs what we're asking of them.

But there's a difference between a dog that understands what you're asking and a dog that's simply waiting for its next reward.

Good training isn't about constantly bribing your dog. It's about building communication, consistency, trust and reliability.

The goal isn't to stop using treats. It's to make sure your dog can respond even when there isn't one on offer.

So here's the question…

This boy came to us for residential training because walks had become stressful. He was reactive towards other dogs and had shown aggression when they got too close.

During his stay, we worked on the behaviour behind those reactions and built a more reliable way for him to respond around other dogs. By the time he went home, he’d made a huge improvement.

Just as importantly, his owner left with a solid plan: what to practice, how to handle difficult moments and how to keep that progress going in everyday life.

Residential training gave him a fresh start. The handover gives his owner the tools to build on it. 🐾

Puppy socialisation doesn’t mean letting everyone say hello. 🐾

Meeting every dog and person can be overwhelming for a puppy. What helps is giving them short, positive, controlled experiences with new people, dogs, sounds and places—at a pace they can handle.

Give them space. Watch how they’re responding. Finish while they’re still comfortable.

In this video, Dan explains why building confidence matters more than collecting as many greetings as possible.

Meet Freya 🐾

Freya is Dan’s Belgian Malinois, and she’s a brilliant example of why people fall in love with this breed: intelligent, driven and always ready to work.

But a Malinois is not for everyone.

They need more than a quick walk and a bit of play. They need your time, consistent training, mental challenges, physical activity and a clear routine. If they don’t have a job to do, they’ll often find one for themselves—and you might not like the job they choose!

It’s easy to see a Malinois doing something impressive online and want one. The important question is whether you can give that dog what it needs every day, not just on the days you have spare time.

Freya is a wonderful dog. She’s also a reminder that choosing the right breed for your life matters just as much as choosing a breed you admire.
