If you find yourself aquaplaning, try not to panic. Instead, gently lift your foot from the accelerator and allow your vehicle’s speed to naturally reduce. This will allow the tyres to regain grip on the road. To help avoid this situation occurring, drivers should first make sure that their driving behaviour is appropriate for the road conditions and, if there is a lot of standing water, reduce their speed.

With the Met office reporting rain and showers all week, adequate tread depth is essential, especially when there is significant standing water. The lower the tread, the less water it can clear, thereby increasing the chances of ‘aquaplaning.’ When this happens, tyres are not effectively in contact with the road, making any attempts by the driver to steer, brake or accelerate ineffective – in other words, they’re out of control.

Remember as part-worn tyres are not required to be examined by x-ray for internal structural defect prior to their sale, it can be impossible to determine if any internal damage exists and the safety of the tyre has been compromised. Part worn is part safe.
