One of the nicest parts of tutoring isn't always seeing a student's maths improve. I's seeing the relationship develop.
Over the past few months I've been working with a lovely year 5 student who's preparingfor her grammar school entrance exams. This has been a slightly different challenge for me as I generally work with older students but I've really enjoyed it.
From our very first lesson she was confident and eager to learn, but confidence alone isn't enough to succeed in these exams. The real challenge is helping knowledge stick. That's where patience, repitition and variety come in.
Every student learns differentl, so part of my job is finding the approach that works for them and then building on it week by week.
One thing I've noticed is how relaxed our sessions togerther have become. We've built a genuine rapport, and I think that's just as important as the academic side. When a student feels comfortable, they're far more willing to ask questions, have a go and learn from mistakes.
It's also been lovely to build that trust with the family, who knows we're all working towards the same goal. Withe the exams now only a couple of months away, we're focusing on strengthening the areas that need a little more work.
