𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 of our recent free Zoom meetings, parents asked whether we could hold another session specifically for families at the beginning of the 11+ journey.

Whether your child is starting Year 4 or Year 5 this September, or you’re just beginning to explore grammar school entry, we’d love you to come along.

We’ll discuss what to expect, when preparation typically begins, and how children develop the mathematical and English skills they need to succeed.

Families whose children are approaching this September’s examinations are also very welcome. We hope some will share their experiences and the advice they wish they’d been given when they first started, offering those at the beginning of the journey valuable insight and reassurance.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for last night's Zoom session. It was a real pleasure to answer so many thoughtful questions, and I hope you came away feeling more confident about the 11+ process. I certainly enjoyed sharing some of the insights I've gained over many years of teaching and examining.

For any Year 5 families who would like additional preparation over the summer, I still have spaces available on my August revision programme. This includes revision lessons, realistic mock examinations and detailed feedback to help students identify strengths and focus on any remaining gaps before September. If you'd like more information, please feel free to get in touch.

I'll also be welcoming my new Year 4 and Year 5 groups from September. For families whose children are currently moving into Year 4, starting preparation early allows them to build strong mathematical foundations, develop confidence and gradually become familiar with the style of reasoning required, without the pressure that often comes with leaving preparation until Year 5.

It's been a lovely week of September registrations.

One of the highlights was meeting a prospective student for a trial lesson this weekend. He was engaged, enthusiastic and a real pleasure to teach. By the end of the lesson, his parents had decided that they would like him to join my Year 5 programme in September.

That student has now taken the final place in my Monday Year 5 group.

I have also been incredibly grateful to see all of my current Year 4 students choosing to continue into Year 5 next year. As a tutor, there is no greater compliment than parents placing their trust in you for another year.

After 23 years of teaching mathematics, including my time as Head of Maths at Sutton Grammar School and as a Sutton 11+ examiner, it is still a privilege to work with such enthusiastic young mathematicians and supportive families.

There are places available in some of my September groups and, depending on demand, I may open an additional group.

The Key Stage 2 curriculum is publicly available to everyone. There are no “secret” 11+ maths topics hidden away from parents.

What makes selective exams challenging is not the syllabus itself, but the depth of understanding required and the ability to apply knowledge accurately in unfamiliar contexts under pressure.

As a former Head of Maths at Sutton Grammar School and previous 11+ examiner, my focus is on helping students develop genuine mathematical thinking, confidence and problem solving skills over time.

Strong progress in 11+ maths does not come from a free downloadable guide or a quick fix. It comes from expert teaching, careful guidance, consistent practice and detailed feedback over time.

I will be running new Year 4 and Year 5 online groups from September, alongside May and summer mock exam programmes with detailed marking, expert feedback and review sessions for families looking for high quality specialist preparation.
