THE ARMY BUILT FOR ONE DEAD EMPEROR

When Qin Shi Huang died, he was not expected to enter the next world alone.

Thousands of life-sized clay soldiers stood ready beneath the ground, arranged in military formation with horses, chariots and real bronze weapons.

Qin Shi Huang became the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BC. His reign transformed the states he had conquered into a single empire governed through standard laws, measurements, writing and administration.

His preparations for death were equally ambitious.

Near his capital, workers created an enormous funerary complex intended to reproduce the world of imperial rule underground. The terracotta army guarded only one part of it. Archaeologists have also uncovered officials, musicians, acrobats, labourers, animals and bronze chariots.

The soldiers were not produced as identical statues. Heads, hairstyles, armour and expressions were assembled in different combinations, creating the appearance of individuals drawn from many ranks of the Qin army.

They were originally far more colourful than they appear today. Their armour and clothing were painted in bright pigments, although much of that colour disappeared soon after excavation.

The warriors remained hidden until 1974, when farmers digging a well near Xi’an encountered fragments of terracotta. Excavation revealed vast underground pits containing figures that had stood unseen for more than two thousand years.

The emperor’s central burial chamber has still not been opened. Archaeologists have chosen caution, allowing conservation methods to develop before disturbing what may survive inside.

The terracotta army is often described as a force created to protect Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife.

But it also reveals something about the world he left behind.

The ruler who united China expected his empire, his authority and his command to continue beyond death.

THE 2,000-YEAR-OLD MACHINE THAT PREDICTED ECLIPSES

More than 2,000 years ago, Greek craftsmen built a machine of bronze gears that could model the movement of the heavens.

Then it disappeared beneath the sea.

The Antikythera mechanism was recovered in 1900–1901 by sponge divers exploring an ancient shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera. At first, its corroded fragments attracted far less attention than the statues and luxury objects found beside them.

Only later did researchers realise what they were looking at.

Hidden inside the damaged bronze were dozens of precisely cut gearwheels, along with dials, pointers and inscriptions. The complete device had probably been housed in a wooden case roughly the size of a shoebox and operated by turning a handle.

Its gears translated the passing of time into mechanical movement.

The front displayed astronomical information, including the positions of the Sun and Moon and the changing phases of the Moon. Dials on the back followed complex calendar cycles and could indicate when solar and lunar eclipses were expected.

It did not observe the sky. Instead, it contained a mechanical model of astronomical knowledge developed over generations.

The machine was made during the Hellenistic period, probably around the late second or early first century BC. Its maker is unknown, and no complete instruction manual survives. Much of its original design must be reconstructed from damaged fragments and faint inscriptions revealed by modern imaging.

No other mechanism of comparable complexity has survived from the ancient world.

That does not mean it was the only one ever built. It may simply be the extraordinary survivor of a lost tradition of Greek mechanical engineering.

The Antikythera mechanism reminds us that ancient technology was not always simple.

Sometimes, the most advanced knowledge of an age could fit inside a wooden box.

THE DESERT CITY THAT MASTERED WATER

Petra was not built beside a great river.

It survived because the Nabataeans learned to control the little water they received—and the sudden floods that could destroy their city.

More than 2,000 years ago, Petra grew among the sandstone mountains of what is now southern Jordan. Its position helped the Nabataeans become wealthy through trade, but the landscape presented an obvious problem.

Water was scarce for much of the year. When rain did arrive, it could rush through the narrow valleys with enormous force.

The Nabataeans turned both dangers to their advantage.

They carved channels into the rock, laid terracotta pipes and brought water from distant springs into the city. Rain falling on the surrounding mountains was guided towards reservoirs and plaster-lined cisterns, where it could be stored for the dry months.

Dams helped slow and redirect floodwater. Near the entrance to the Siq—the narrow gorge leading into Petra—a diversion system carried dangerous torrents away from the city centre.

The network did more than keep people alive. It supplied different neighbourhoods, supported agriculture and provided reserves for the merchants, animals and caravans passing through Petra.

Its success depended on careful control. Channels had to descend at the correct angle. Sediment needed to be removed before it blocked the pipes. Cisterns had to be protected against leakage and contamination.

Today, visitors naturally focus on Petra’s enormous façades carved into the cliffs.

But none of them could have belonged to a thriving city without the quieter engineering hidden around them: channels running beside paths, reservoirs cut into hillsides and cisterns beneath the rock.

Petra was shaped from stone.

Its civilisation was made possible by water.

THE PHARAOH THEY TRIED TO ERASE

Twenty years after Hatshepsut died, someone began removing her from Egypt’s history.

Her names were chiselled from inscriptions. Images of her were cut away or replaced. Statues were taken down, broken apart and buried among the ruins of her own temple.

Yet Hatshepsut had not been an obscure ruler.

She had governed Egypt for almost twenty years during the 15th century BC. Beginning as regent for the young Thutmose III, she later assumed the full titles and authority of a pharaoh, ruling alongside him as the senior monarch.

Egyptian kingship had traditionally been represented as male. Hatshepsut therefore appeared on monuments wearing the royal headdress, kilt and ceremonial beard of a king. Some images preserved her feminine features and titles; others presented her almost entirely in the traditional male form.

Her reign brought major building projects, renewed foreign trade and some of the finest royal art of the New Kingdom. Her greatest monument was the terraced temple of Deir el-Bahri, built against the cliffs west of the Nile.

Then, long after her death, the campaign against her memory began.

Thutmose III ordered many of her names and royal images removed. The exact reason remains uncertain. It may have been intended to restore a conventional male line of succession rather than an act of personal revenge.

Recent research has also complicated the story. Not every broken statue was smashed in anger. Some were carefully removed, ritually stripped of their power and later reused as building stone.

The attempt was systematic—but it failed.

Fragments of her statues were eventually recovered and reassembled. The feminine grammar left beside erased names helped scholars identify the missing ruler.

Hatshepsut had been cut from the stone, but not from history.

THE ANCIENT CIVILISATION WE STILL CANNOT READ

We can walk through their cities, examine their jewellery and hold objects marked with their symbols.

But we still cannot read their words.

Around 4,500 years ago, the Indus civilisation flourished across parts of what are now Pakistan and northwestern India. Its people built carefully planned cities such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, with brick houses, wells and sophisticated drainage systems.

They also created hundreds of distinctive signs.

These symbols appear on pottery, small tablets and finely carved stone seals. Many seals show an animal beneath a short row of signs: bulls, elephants, rhinoceroses and the mysterious one-horned creature often described as a “unicorn”.

Their meaning remains unknown.

Most surviving inscriptions contain only a handful of signs. There are no long royal proclamations, historical chronicles or religious texts to provide context. Nor has anyone discovered a bilingual inscription—the equivalent of the Rosetta Stone—with the same message written in both the Indus script and a known language.

Researchers can identify repeated patterns and signs that tend to appear in particular positions. But they do not know what language, if any, lies behind them.

The seals may have recorded names, occupations, ownership or the movement of goods. They could have been carried by merchants or pressed into clay to mark packages and containers. These remain informed possibilities rather than translations.

This silence shapes everything we know about the Indus civilisation.

Its people left behind vast cities, skilled craftsmanship and evidence of long-distance trade. Yet no ruler, official or ordinary citizen can speak to us by name.

Until a longer text or bilingual inscription is discovered, their signs may remain visible but unread.

Sparta is often remembered as the toughest city in ancient Greece.

Its citizens were raised for discipline, obedience and war. Spartan society produced some of the most feared hoplites in the Greek world, and its military reputation became legendary. On land, few Greek rivals wanted to face Sparta in battle.

But strength is not only about soldiers.

Athens built power in a different way. It developed the strongest navy in Greece, protected itself with the Long Walls, drew wealth from trade and tribute, and became a centre of politics, drama, philosophy and craftsmanship. It could project influence far beyond Attica in a way Sparta rarely could.

The two city-states represented two very different models of power.

Sparta was built for endurance, order and military discipline.
Athens was built for wealth, naval reach and cultural influence.

That raises the real question.

WHO BUILT THE BETTER CITY?

Some of the ancient world’s most impressive cities were built around very different ideas of urban life.

In the Indus Valley, cities such as Mohenjo-daro and Harappa were laid out with remarkable order. Streets followed clear plans. Houses were built from baked brick. Many were connected to drainage systems, while wells supplied water throughout residential areas.

What stands out is not monumental display, but practical organisation.

Roman cities developed in a different direction. They were built around paved roads, aqueducts, public baths, fountains, markets and monumental civic buildings. Water could be transported over long distances, supporting large populations and a highly public style of urban life.

Both systems were extraordinary.

The Indus cities appear especially strong in planning, sanitation and everyday practicality.

Roman cities stand out for scale, engineering and public infrastructure.

So which was the greater urban achievement?

Did the Indus civilisation create the better city for daily life, or did the Romans build the more advanced urban system overall?

THE 9,000-YEAR-OLD SETTLEMENT WITH NO STREETS

At Çatalhöyük, the rooftops were the streets.

The houses of this ancient settlement were built directly against one another, forming a dense mass of mud-brick walls across the plain of central Anatolia. There were no roads or narrow lanes between them.

People moved across the flat roofs and entered their homes by climbing down wooden ladders through openings in the ceiling.

The roof was not simply an entrance. It was an outdoor working space and probably a place where neighbours met, cooked and carried out daily tasks.

Inside, most homes followed a similar pattern. A main room contained an oven, storage areas and raised plastered platforms used for sleeping and household work. The walls were regularly covered with fresh white plaster and were sometimes decorated with paintings, geometric designs and animal remains.

The dead remained part of the household. Many people were buried beneath the platforms where their families continued to sleep, eat and work.

Çatalhöyük was occupied for more than two thousand years. When a house was abandoned, it could be filled in and another built above it. Over generations, these layers created the great mound that archaeologists explore today.

No palace or monumental government building appears to have dominated the settlement. Its social world seems to have been centred on the household rather than a king or ruling elite.

Çatalhöyük reminds us that early urban life did not always begin with roads, temples and royal power.

Here, it began with families living wall to wall—and walking across one another’s roofs.

The first empire in history rose more than 4,000 years ago — long before Rome or Persia.

The Akkadian Empire was founded around 2334 BC by Sargon of Akkad. He conquered the independent city-states of Sumer and brought much of Mesopotamia under one dynasty.

The empire reached its height under his grandson Naram-Sin, who ruled during the 23rd century BC. He controlled a state made up of different cities and peoples, all answering to the king of Akkad.

Governors ruled important cities in his name. Soldiers crushed rebellions, while scribes recorded grain, workers, tribute and royal orders on clay tablets. This system allowed one ruler to control far more than a single city and its surrounding land.

Naram-Sin used the title “King of the Four Quarters,” claiming authority over the entire known world.

The empire’s capital was Akkad, also known as Agade. Despite its importance, archaeologists have still never found its ruins, and its exact location remains unknown.

At the height of his power, Naram-Sin went beyond kingship — then declared himself a god.
