Play theorist Bob Hughes identified 16 different types of play — creative, imaginative, exploratory, symbolic, social, mastery and more. Once you start looking for them, you realise just how much can be happening when a child is apparently “just playing”.
A cardboard box isn't one thing.
It can be cut up, climbed into, joined to another one, drawn on, turned upside down, worn, built with, destroyed, rebuilt — or become something that would never have occurred to us.
And that's exactly the point.
We can create the conditions for their ideas to happen.
So at Let’s Create, you'll find cardboard, tape, scissors, fabric, pens, Makedo tools and plenty of random gubbins.
You won't find an example of what everybody is supposed to make.
Because we don't want children to get better at following our ideas.
We want them to trust their own.
Time. Materials. Permission.
And then we see what happens.
