Simply Cellos is a unique 'cello shop as I specialise in renting or selling secondhand but high quality cellos that have been set up to perfection!

ely at home. I long ago became fed up with the awful cellos that pupils were bringing to their lessons. Most rental and sales shops send their cellos out straight from the manufacturer. The bridges and top nuts are set too high (making it hard for little fingers to press the strings down), the pegs often dont stay as they haven't properly fitted, and the strings are cheap factory ones. So I started to buy good quality secondhand cellos and have them properly set up, then change the strings to expensive, great quality ones. This really does make such a difference - both to the pupil playing the cello and to the parents listening to them practise! I became so passionate about it that I set up Simply Cellos, just renting out to pupils at the schools I taught at. Other cello teachers heard about what I do, and so Simply Cellos began to expand! I thought it was about time I expanded further and set up an actual shop, providing quality Cellos of all sizes and levels to both children and adults. I am very excited to send these lovely cellos on their way to new homes!

This beautiful Handmade Cello by John Horton came back from the Luthier and was restrung on Wednesday.

I hadn't even had a chance to play it when a lovely customer (who came back to buy another cello!) saw it and asked to play it.

So I tuned it and had a quick play on it myself and her eyes lit up...as did mine!

Wow!

The sound it made was beautiful, powerful, and carried so well. It was also so easy to play.

Sadly for me she chose it and bought it. Happily for this lovely lady, she has a beautiful Cello to learn on 😁

One with history, that has never been played in the almost 30 years since it was made, and will sound better and better as it is played in 😍

Just a few of the new Cellos for Hire and for Sale that are back from the Luthier who works his magic on them 😍

All ready for re-stringing...I will use Jargar, Larsen Aurora, Larsen Original, Prelude, and Pirastro strings.

Each cello is unique and responds differently to the different strings, so it's quite a job to get it right for so many!

I love hearing the result of the hard work at the end though 🤩

I will show the Cellos I have to offer in posts in the next few days.

Having a nostalgic moment 💗

I was so privileged as a teenager to be able to play in such an amazing cello group 😍

We won our category in the National Festival of Youth for Music with this incredible piece, gaining the chance to perform it in the Royal Albert Hall

All thanks to our very special cello teacher Jack Zerfahs (sadly no longer with us 😕)

The piece is Bachianas Brazilieras No 1 by Hector Villa-Lobos

In celebration of our feature on Heitor Villa-Lobos and the cello in the July 2021 issue, here is a performance with no shortage of cello

Loving the moody sky against the glowing sunflowers on this one!

Today the Cello I played for the photoshoot is a Preloved Primavera 200, set up with Jargar and Larsen Original Strings. It has a lovely depth to its tone!

Public warning...look away if a broken cello image causes you harm 😳🙈🤣

So this was not exactly what I had in mind when I bought the latest cello for my Cello Shop 🤣😨

I have to say this cello was sent to me from a very good supplier, it's the couriers fault 😱

Just how many pieces can one cello be in?

And no, it's not getting repaired 🤣

Thanks to my amazing Luthier (Anthony Nickolds Violins) I have already had its replacement sorted and set up 😁

I just need to change the strings, probably for Larsen Aurora for this particular cello, then it's going out on rental next weekend 🤩

The ten steps of changing a Cello Tailpiece...it really is quite a lengthy, tricky job, but one I enjoy doing!

This lovely Andreas Zeller Cello came to me recently and needed some work done before being rented out.

Part of that was to change the old heavy wooden tailpiece with metal adjusters for a much lighter, slimmer alloy one.

This makes a big difference to the sound of the cello, as the extra weight of the old tailpiece dampens the sound.
It also makes the cello heavier!
