What are the 5 Types of Digital Literacy? 25/04/2024

What are the different types of digital literacy?
In 2024 being literate means more than reading and writing.

It's about mastering the tools and skills that are needed to navigate and thrive in a digital landscape, whether that’s in education or beyond and into the workplace.

There are many definitions of digital literacy, but eSchoolNews.com groups them into the following 5 categories:

1. Information literacy:
The ability to locate, evaluate, and use digital information critically. This includes skills in searching the internet, discerning credible sources, and conducting effective online research.

2. Media literacy:
This focuses on understanding and interpreting various forms of digital media, including images, videos, and online articles. Individuals with media literacy skills can analyse visual content, recognise potential biases, and assess the credibility of information presented in different media formats.

3. Communication and collaboration:
Proficiency in digital communication tools includes effective use of email, messaging apps, and collaborative platforms. Individuals with these skills can communicate clearly and collaborate with others using digital tools.

4. Cybersecurity awareness:
This type of digital literacy involves understanding online safety practices, recognising potential cyber threats, and protecting personal information. It includes knowledge of secure password practices, recognising phishing attempts, and maintaining digital security.

5. Coding and computational thinking:
Advanced digital literacy includes coding skills and computational thinking. This involves understanding the basics of programming languages, logical problem-solving, and the ability to create and understand digital algorithms.

By cultivating digital literacy, you can enable students to succeed by empowering them with the skills to confidently navigate data, information, visuals, and media to achieve their goals in school and in the world of work beyond education.

Educational technology vs assistive technologies: What’s the difference between the two?
If you’d like us to unravel the answer, then please keep reading.......

Educational technology, or edtech, and assistive technologies, or AT, both play crucial roles in enhancing the learning experience.
But at the same time they both serve distinct purposes.

Edtech: Edtech refers to a broad spectrum of digital tools, platforms, and resources designed to support and enhance teaching and learning processes. These technologies encompass everything from interactive whiteboards and learning management systems to educational apps and online courses. Edtech aims to facilitate engagement, collaboration, and to create personalised learning experiences for students and educators alike.

AT: On the other hand, AT is specifically designed to assist individuals with disabilities or special needs in overcoming barriers to learning and participation. These technologies can range from screen readers and speech-to-text software to braille displays and alternative input devices. Assistive technologies aim to promote inclusivity, accessibility, and independence by providing tailored solutions that address individual needs and challenges.

By understanding these key differences between edtech and AT, educators, parents, and policymakers can better leverage these tools to create inclusive and empowering learning environments for all learners.

Which digital skills are employers seeking?
And how can you equip your students with the right digital skills to ensure that they enter the workplace with a competitive advantage?

As an expert edtech consultancy we are proud to work with schools across the UK to help students and teachers with their digital strategies and tools.

So, here’s 7 of the skills employers are seeking from young people entering the workplace in 2024 and how edtech can help you address them:

1. Data Literacy: Crunching numbers isn't just for mathematicians anymore! Employers actively seek candidates who can analyse data to derive insights and make informed decisions. So data skills will help individuals to stand out in today's data-driven world.

2. Coding Proficiency: Whether it's building websites, developing apps, or automating processes, coding is the backbone of modern technology. Equipping pupils with the coding skills to unlock endless possibilities will help them complete in the digital race.

3. Digital Marketing: In a crowded online marketplace, digital marketing skills can be a game-changer. From social media management to SEO wizardry, mastering digital marketing tactics can help boost brand visibility and drive business growth making them a valuable company asset.

4. Cybersecurity Awareness: Cybersecurity has become a top priority for organisations across industries. Learning pupils how to stay vigilant and learn cybersecurity ropes to protect sensitive data and safeguard digital assets will give them another edge.

5. Adaptability & Tech Agility: In today's fast-paced tech landscape, the only constant is change. Employers value candidates who are adaptable and quick to embrace new technologies to help their companies stay relevant in an ever-evolving digital world.

6. Collaborative Tools Proficiency: Remote work and virtual collaboration have become the new norm. Familiarising pupils with collaborative tools like Google Workspace will allow them to collaborate seamlessly and efficiently with teams across the globe.

7. Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Technology may be powerful, but it's nothing without human ingenuity. Sharpen your pupils’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills to tackle complex challenges and drive innovation in the digital age.
