We are delighted to share that Laura, one of the founders of Acer Learning, has successfully passed her Access Arrangements Assessor qualification with Real Training.

This qualification enables Laura to carry out specialist assessments to identify the appropriate access arrangements for students, ensuring they have fair and equitable access to examinations.

At Acer Learning, we are passionate about removing barriers to learning and helping every young person reach their full potential. This is another exciting step in expanding the support we can offer to schools, home-educated students, families and alternative education providers.

Grammar tips for parents! What are pronouns?

Ever notice your child writing the same noun over and over? That’s where pronouns come in!

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun, so we don’t have to repeat the same name or object again and again.

It helps writing flow better and sound more natural!

Examples:
Instead of: Sarah went to Sarah’s bag because Sarah forgot Sarah’s phone…
Use: Sarah went to her bag because she forgot her phone.

Common pronouns:
he, she, it, they, we, you, I, me, him, her, us, them

There are also different types of pronouns, like:
🔹 Personal pronouns – I, you, he, she...
🔹 Possessive pronouns – mine, yours, theirs...
🔹 Reflexive pronouns – myself, herself, themselves...

Understanding pronouns helps children write clearly and avoid repetition – a key step in strong writing skills!

THE END...is just the beginning of a new adventure!

As our Year 11 students complete their final exams and prepare for the next stage of their lives, we want to take a moment to celebrate their hard work, resilience and achievements. We are incredibly proud of everything they have accomplished during their time with Acer Learning and wish them every success for the future.

At the same time, we are delighted to be welcoming new students into our provision. For them, this marks the beginning of a new journey—one filled with opportunities to grow in confidence, develop new skills and achieve their potential.

At Acer Learning, we believe that every young person deserves the chance to succeed. As one cohort moves on to exciting new opportunities, another begins their path with us, and we look forward to supporting them every step of the way.

What is time?

Over the last five weeks, our online Socratic discussion group has been debating this deceptively simple question:

Drawing on philosophy, history, science and literature, students explored a range of perspectives and challenged one another's thinking through respectful debate and challenge.

We considered philosophical questions such as whether time is something that truly exists or simply a way humans make sense of change. We examined how different cultures and historical periods have understood time, from ancient civilisations tracking the seasons to the invention of clocks and calendars.

In science, discussions explored how our understanding of time has evolved, including the revolutionary ideas of Einstein and the relationship between time, space and gravity. Through literature, students considered how writers manipulate time in stories and how memories, anticipation and narrative shape our experience of it.

The discussion encouraged learners to think critically, listen actively, and engage with complex ideas that bridge multiple subjects. There were no easy answers—but plenty of thoughtful questions.

We are incredibly proud of the curiosity, confidence and intellectual maturity demonstrated by our learners throughout the session.

Our year 10 students Axis Performing Arts have been exploring Romeo and Juliet, focusing on Romeo's famous declaration that "Juliet is the sun."

Students analysed how Shakespeare uses this powerful metaphor to present Juliet as the centre of Romeo's world, bringing light, warmth and meaning to his life. We then extended our learning beyond the text by examining the scientific beliefs of Shakespeare's time.

We explored the contrast between the traditional geocentric model, which placed the Earth at the centre of the universe, and the emerging heliocentric theory, which argued that the Sun was at the centre. This led to some fantastic discussions about how Romeo's comparison of Juliet to the sun could be viewed as both romantic and subtly rebellious, challenging accepted ways of thinking just as new scientific ideas were beginning to challenge established beliefs.

By connecting literature, history and science, students developed a deeper understanding of Shakespeare's language and the world in which he was writing.
