This week, our AP students at Axis Performing Arts have been developing their prediction skills...with a twist!

Students were challenged to imagine they were Cinna from The Hunger Games, designing the outfits Katniss and Peeta would wear for the opening ceremonies. Think Dress to Impress… but with a literary lens!

The challenge wasn’t simply to design something that looked impressive. Students had to predict what Cinna might choose and justify their ideas using evidence from the text.

Along the way, we explored how authors use symbolism and motifs to communicate deeper ideas. Students considered what different colours, images, materials and designs might represent and how Cinna could use clothing to send a message without saying a word.
The students loved this creative activity which developed their skills of prediction!

Another amazing week at Acer Learning!

It's been incredible to hear about the successes of our year 11 students in maths this week. We’re delighted that a number of our GCSE students have been moved up to higher sets and higher-tier papers!

This is fantastic recognition of the hard work, determination and progress they have shown. Their commitment is really paying off and we couldn’t be prouder of what they are achieving.

A huge well done to all of our students — keep believing in yourselves, keep working hard and keep aiming high.

One of the great things about teaching poetry is seeing students realise that the themes in a poem written hundreds of years ago can still feel surprisingly relevant today.

While studying Robert Browning’s My Last Duchess with our homeschooled students, we explored the Duke’s desire for control, his jealousy and the imbalance of power within the relationship. From there, we were able to connect the poem to modern discussions around unhealthy and toxic relationships, including control, possessiveness, jealousy and power.

It’s such a valuable moment when literature stops being “just a poem” and becomes a way of understanding the world around us.

"What is the right thing to do?"

In our latest online debate class, we took a journey through the history of morality, exploring how thinkers across the centuries have approached the question of how we should live.

From Aristotle and Confucius to Kant and modern-day ethics, we explored three major approaches to morality:

Virtue ethics – What kind of person should I be?
Deontological ethics – What is my duty, regardless of the outcome?
Consequential ethics – What action produces the best outcome?

But we didn’t stop at theory! Our students were challenged to put each perspective into practice by working through the same scenario from three different ethical viewpoints.

It was fascinating to see how changing the ethical framework can completely change the way we think about a decision!

A thought-provoking session exploring philosophy, reasoning and the many different ways we can approach the question: “What is the right thing to do?

The Power of Fiction!

We've had a fantastic week at Creative Education and Axis Performing Arts

Our key stage 3 students have been completely hooked as we've read the first chapter of The Hunger Games. We had considered the odds, we had explored the mathematical reality and we had made our predictions...but the class fell silent when they read who had been selected in the reaping from District 12.

It's always a thrill to see genuine engagement in fiction and also the faces of those who were secretly reading ahead!

It has been wonderful to welcome our students back for the new term. We are so proud of the way they have approached their first full week — with enthusiasm, positivity and a real commitment to learning.

The start of a new school year can be challenging, but our students have shown resilience and determination as they settle back into routines and set new goals for the year ahead. We are excited to see all that they will achieve this term and beyond.
